vault at 14 feet, 1/4 inches at the Mt. Sac Relays
on April 19 took the top spot. It was also an Ore
gon record.
Last year, the diminutive senior finished third
in the conference championships, finishing at a
height of 13-5 1/4.
Joining Holliday in the pole vault competition is
fellow senior Niki McEwen, second in the confer
ence in the event, and junior Kirsten Riley, who
finished the regular season at a height of 12-9 1/2
at the Oregon Twilight on May 3.
McEwen is second in the Pac-10 in the event,
clearing 13-11 1/4 at the Pepsi Invitational at Hay
ward Field on April 12.
Senior Georgette Moyle and sophomore Hannah
Moore, who both topped 12-5 1/2, will also be
making the trek down South.
In what could be one of their last appearances
for the Ducks, sophomores Roslyn Lundeen and
Elisa Crumley will join their pole vaulting mates.
With women’s throws coach Sally Harmon not be
ing retained for next season, the duo have both
said they would consider transferring.
Reportedly, both have considered Georgia,
among others, but have yet to make a decision.
Each has a chance to place high at the Pac-lOs,
Lundeen entering the weekend fourth in the Pac
10 (158-3) and Crumley fifth (157-11).
Senior Amanda Brown, who has finished as high
as sixth in the Pac-10 Championships in the triple
jump, is Oregon’s leader in the event this year. She
finished the season at 40-9 1/2.
Jenny Brogdon is the team’s only entrant in the
high jump, clearing the stick at 5-7 four times this
season. The senior took second last season at the
Pac-lOs, finishing at a height of 5-9 1/4.
Finishing up the team’s field events, Mary Et
ter and Jordan Sauvage bolster Oregon’s
chances of earning quality points. Etter, in her
final Pac-10 competition, is third in the discus
at 176-0. Sauvage, who owns the Oregon record
in the hammer, is fifth in the Pac-10 in the
event at 191-4.
The Ducks are not as strong in the running
events, placing just one entrant in most events.
The 1,500 and 5,000 meter races, however, will be
full of Oregon hopefuls.
Seniors Eri Macdonald and Carrie Zografos
lead the pack in the 1,500, followed closely by
sophomore Laura Harmon. Macdonald finished
the year at 4:25.81, also is set to run in the 800.
She finished fourth (2:07.40) in the conference
in the latter event.
Sophomore Magdalena Sandoval reigns
supreme in the 5,000, placing first among Duck
entrants at 16:43.94. Following closely is Zografos
at 16:51.10, while freshman Nicole Feest is farther
behind at 16:57.94.
Also joining the Ducks in Los Angeles is senior
Janette Davis, who is set to compete in the 200
and 400.
“She’s a better runner this year, and she com
petes really well in the clutch,” head coach Tom
Heinonen said.
For Heinonen, the meet is his final Pac-10 com
petition at the helm of the Ducks.
The 27-year head coach has finished first in
the conference 11 times in his career, the last
time coming in 1992. Last season, the team fin
ished 6th in the Pac-10, and Oregon has not fin
ished higher than fifth since 1996, when the
Ducks took second.
With a long list on high marks — despite Holli
day being the only athlete to lead the conference
— the Ducks could send Heinonen into retirement
with an impressive showing.
