News briefs University honors Ann Curry with alumni award The University has awarded NBC news anchor and University alumna Ann Gurry with a Pioneer Award, given since 1979 to recognize alumni who have become leaders and risk-takers in their fields. “For me to be honored in this way for perhaps doing something pioneering in my work and rep resenting Oregon means so much because it means for me that the American dream is alive and well, and things are still possible for anyone who works hard and doesn't give up,” Gurry said in an interview for Portland news station KGW. Gurry is a native of Ashland and began her journalism career in 1978 as a reporter and news anchor at NBC affiliate KTVL in Medford. After working from 1981 to 1984 for NBC’s KGW, and from 1984 to 1990 for KCBS in Los Angeles, she joined NBC News as the network’s Chicago corre spondent. Currently, she is a news anchor on the Today Show and frequently fills in on NBC Night ly News. — Roman Gokhman Senate transfers funds for events; Andy Elliot resigns The ASUO Student Senate rushed through a series of requests from student groups at its Wednesday night meeting. The first string of requests came from MEChA, which was in need of funding to make up the deficit it acquired from its regional conference. The senate approved transfers to MEChA’s con ference account, including #600 from its recruit ment account, #450 from its multicultural ac count and #54 from its office supplies account. The senate also approved a transfer of #24 from MEChA’s advertising account to its printing and duplication account and #16 from its advertising account to its postage account. The LGBTQA also had its requests approved to fund events during Gay Pride Month. The senate approved transfers to the LGBTQA’s annual events account, including #280 from its Queer Prom account, #80 from its speakers account, #15 from its longdistance account and#150 from its payroll office manager account. The senate also approved a transfer of # 1,100 from surplus to the group’s annual events account. Club Sports requested funding from surplus as well to help fund the Ultimate Frisbee team’s na tional playoffs. The senate approved the trans fer of $4,225 from surplus to the Club Sports Men’s Ultimate account. Finally, the senate debated whether to trans fer #1,000 from surplus to the Multicultural Center, which would be used for an upcoming conference event. MCC representatives noted they are collaborating with other departments to fund events at the conference, but the sen ate was hesitant to allocate the full #1,000 and instead voted in favor of transferring #400. In other senate business, Andy Elliott re signed his seat after three years of senate serv ice, and some newly-elected senators attend ed the meeting and introduced themselves to the group. — Chelsea Duncan Faculty continued from page 1 he said. “I don’t see it as a controversial motion in anyway.” According to the motion, the report will have two parts. First, it would provide information on “current procedures, or policies under consid eration” that relate to “requests from govern ment agencies for access to academic records, personnel files, student health files, mail, e-mail, voice mail and records of Internet searches, li brary borrowing and book buying in response to the PATRIOT Act and other similar legislation and executive orders. ” Second, it would detail “limitations on re search, including restrictions on materials, per sonnel and dissemination of results, imposed by the PATRIOT Act and other similar legislation and executive orders. ” Speaking to the Senate before the vote, Uni versity General Counsel Melinda Grier said the government has not yet made any requests the University for access to student records. “Many colleges and universities have not had requests,” she said. However, Grier said various departments have already implemented policies and proce dures for dealing with future government re quests for information. She said many departments likely to receive such requests — including the library, the ad missions office and Student Health Services — would consult with Grier’s office before releas ing any information. Student representative Eric Bailey praised the Senate’s vote. “I think that it’s something that's definitely necessary,” he said. “I’m concerned about how the USA PATRIOT Act would affect international students... and I hope that this motion goes to ward protecting their rights.” The USA PATRIOT Act, which stands for the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Ob struct Terrorism Act of 2001, was passed after the terror attacks of Sept. 11,2001, and gave the federal government broad new powers to com bat terrorism.
