The Ducks are already a leg up on
the competition. Santiago Lorenzo
won the Pac-10 decathlon title Sun
day while Jason Slye finished fourth,
and Andy Young finished fifth. The
Ducks notched 19 points overall to
ward the team competition.
Those are real points, too, not just
future points.
Speaking of Santi...
The senior decathlete earned Pac
10 Track and Field Athlete of the
Week honors for his first-place per
formance in Los Angeles. It was the
fourth such award for the Ducks this
season.
It was Lorenzo’s fourth athlete of
the week honor in his career as a
Duck. Lorenzo won the award twice
in 2001 and once in 2000.
The real Deal
Just how good a hammer throw
er was Lance Deal in his prime?
This good: He won silver at the
Olympics in Atlanta in 1996, his
third of four Olympic appearances.
His best year was 1996, when he
finished first in the world, and he
finished in the top 10 in the world
after five other seasons.
Now, all that experience will come
down on the track team with the
weight of a shot put.
“There’s a way to compete, and
Lance has shown he can do that for a
number of years,” senior thrower
James March said.
Deal, who has been an assistant
with the men this season and a pres
ence at Eugene meets for years, will
officially coach the throws for the
combined Duck program next year.
“When I look back on it, I think I
wish he could’ve been my coach four

National rank
Not that anybody’s thinking na
tionally with the conference meet fast
approaching, but the Ducks once
again stayed stagnant in this week’s
version of the Trackwire.com Top 25.
Oregon is ranked No. 17 in the poll.

Oregon days. She credits many im
provements in the players to their
hard work and the work of assistant
coaches J Gaudreau and Mike
White. She rarely says anything
even slightly similar to “I think I
called a great play there” or “I
shouldn’t have called that steal at
tempt, the pickoff ended our rally.”
Instead, Arendsen talks about
how proud she is of the team, how
hard they work and how well they
play as a team.
She also talks about the future.
When they win their regional.
When they make travel arrange
ments for the NCAA Women’s Col
lege World Series.
She’s an optimist and exactly the
kind of coach Oregon needs to turn
around its softball program.
With all her experience and her
winning record, “K.O. Kathy” is
Oregon’s 180-degree turn in the
right direction.
