- Beavers continued from page 9 “It’s the Pac-10, so it’s unbelievable.” Nestled in the southeast cor ner of the Oregon State campus, Goss Stadium is a finely land scaped ballpark, something that Casey takes great pride in. Campus buildings surround the left field fence, and in right, a set of train tracks sit 50 feet from the fence. In 2002, Oregon State improved the park with the addi tion of lights, making it the first time in the program’s history that it could play night games. “I think (lights) give you a lot of flexibility,” Oregon State Athletic Director Bob De Garolis said. “As a former player, I always loved to play under the lights. It shows a level of commitment.” In 1998, the outfield was rebuilt, and in 1996, the infield received major work. Both stages allowed for better playability and drainage when it rains. Casey said there are plans to add a picnic area along the right field foul area after construction around the ballpark ends. Ultimately, the Beavers would like to host an NCAA Regional tour nament, held every year in late May. The eight regionals are awarded to the nation’s best teams and are an indication of a school’s facilities. “No question, that would be a goal of ours to host a regional,” Casey said. “That would be awe some. It would be a great thing for this community and a great thing for this state. This facility, without question, is capable of handling it.” That may not be a reality for the Beavers in the near future. After this season, Oregon State is assured of returning just two pitchers who started a game in 2003. Offensively, the Beavers are guar anteed of losing just two starters from Monday night’s game. Casey has two freshmen in the lineup, as the core of the team is a mix of sophomores and juniors. Defensively, Oregon State could be liable to the big inning next season, much as they were Monday. But of fensively, the Beavers could very well improve on a team that has hit for a .307 average this season. About that game against No. 3 Arizona State. The Sun Devils pounded out 13 hits en route to a 14-4 blowout win. Just another case of the Beavers being outmatched, at least for the afternoon. “It was a hard loss,” pitcher Jake Postlewait said. “But we’re a good team. We can probably play with them. We just can’t make as many errors as we did.” Contact the sports reporter at hankhager@dailyemerald.com.
