who you admire,” she said. “So it
will be good for everyone to com
pete with someone at that level.”
“Abby’s a really tough competi
tor, and we’ve seen that all year
long,” Oregon women’s head coach
Tom Heinonen said. “There’s a lot
she can achieve this weekend.”
Along with the multi-event
championships, Oregon sends four
athletes to Palo Alto, Calif., in a
last-minute attempt to earn Pac-10
and regional qualifying marks at
Stanford’s Cardinal Qualifier.
Redshirt freshman Sara Schaaf
and senior Eri Macdonald will
look to improve in the 800 me
ters. Schaaf is just two seconds off
of the Pac-10 and regional quali
fying standard after running a
personal best of 2:12.87 in the
Oregon Invitational.
“I’ve had it on my mind every
day,” Schaaf said. “I’ve been
given one more opportunity to
give it my all, do my best and get
out there.”
Junior Jill Hoxmeier will try and
reach the 168 foot, 4-inch mark in
the women’s hammer with a cur
rent personal best of 162-6.
Oregon will also send redshirt
senior Carrie Zografos as she
tries to slide under the regional
5,000-meter qualifying mark of
17 minutes.
After qualifying in the 1,500 me
ters last weekend in a personal best
of 4:26.09, chances seem good.
“Her time in the 1,500 clearly
shows she can run under 17 min
utes,” Heinonen said.

trip down to Los Angeles.
“A lot of the teams have just one
person there; we’ll have three
guys,” Slye said. “That alone is a
huge advantage for all of us. Espe
cially if Santi’s off to a great start,
it’s motivation for us to stay
with him.”
The bottom line, Lorenzo said, is
that the three Ducks need to start
the rest of the team off on the
right foot.
“We like it because we know
we’re good, and we can do good
things for the team,” Lorenzo said.
In other action this weekend,
Oregon will send a handful of ath
letes to Palo Alto, Calif., for the
Cardinal Qualifier. The group in
cludes thrower James March,
distance runner Erik Heinonen
and freshman high jumpers
Chad Clason, Jeff Lindsey and
Teddy Davis.

Horoscope by Linda C. Black
Today’s Birthday (May 9). Making your
home comfortable is an achievable goal
this year. You might decide to entertain,
too, and that would give you a good
reason to fix up the place.
To get the advantage, check the day's
rating; 10 is the easiest day, 0 the most
challenging.
Aries (March 21-April 19) _ Today is a
7 _ Taking action works much better
now than just talking about it. There's
been plenty of time for that. Don't
ignore financial limits.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) _ Today is a 6
_ Entertaining at your house could be
lots of fun, for you as well as your
guests. Let them know how they can
help. That way you're not stuck with all
of the work.
Gemini (May 21-June 21) _ Today is a
6 _ Recent disruptions concerning your
home could make you more secure.
Don't focus on the messes. Concentrate
on cleaning them up.
Cancer (June 22-July 22) _ Today is a
6 _ Greater abundance can be yours
without a lot more work. Request a
cost-of-living increase so that you can
attain the lifestyle to which you'd like to
become accustomed.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) _ Today is a 7 _
Get the job done early and avoid a rep
rimand. Set up a date for later with a
bunch of your very best friends.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) _ Today is a 7
_ You may have felt stuck lately, but that
won't be the case for long. Better
decide what you want to create. The
opportunity is coming.
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) _ Today is an 8
_ It sure would be a lovely day to take
off a little early. If you get paid by the
hour, though, that's not a good idea.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) _ Today is a
6 _ They say that opposites attract, and
if that's really true, you ought to have a
lot of fun. Minimize compromise.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) _ Today
is an 8 _ Conditions improve toward the
evening, but things get complicated
again tomorrow. Better schedule a date
for tonight. You may be too busy this
weekend.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) _ Today is
a 6 _ You can accumulate a lot if you
set your mind to it. Working hard is an
asset, of course, but self-discipline is
the key.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) _ Today is a
7 _ The direct approach may not seem
to work, but a roundabout process will.
If at first you don't succeed, try a differ
ent tactic.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) _ Today is a
6 _ Hold your course and finish doing
what you said you'd do. You can
increase your status as well as your
income.
