STUDENT-AT-LARGE
POSITION
Matthew Bauman
As a candidate for the Student-at-Large position on
the UO Bookstore Board of Directors, the qualities I
possess would make me the best vote for this
position. The knowledge I have gained in my
accounting and business classes, along with my
experience in the leadership of the U of O Running
Club, would be an asset to the bookstore board of
directors. I am prepared to work hard and dedicate
my time and energy to make the bookstore the best
it can be for all students! I am a dedicated,
trustworthy and qualified individual who, like you,
has concerns about the costs of textbooks, book
buyback prices, and the operations of the
bookstore. If elected, I will promote the Board
having it’s own e-mail address so you can share
directly with it. To become more responsive to
YOUR needs, I would promote programs that
emphasize customer satisfaction and student
services. Together, we can improve our bookstore!
On election day, the best choice is a Vote for
MATTHEW BAUMAN.

I am committed to making the University of Oregon
Bookstore a successful and efficient means for
students to access the materials needed each term.
I feel that my experience in customer service, retail
sales, finance, and business make me well suited to
contribute to the Board of Directors. One way in
which I feel that i can contribute is by focusing on a
strong channel of communication between the store
and it’s consumers. A high level of importance
should be placed on the feedback of students in
regards to the stores ability to meet their needs. I
look forward to the opportunity to represent the
concerns of other students and make a positive
impact on the bookstore operation.
Lisa Freeman
Over the past three years I have made regular
purchases at the University of Oregon Bookstore,
Inc. I have experienced firsthand the helpfulness
and the resourcefulness of its employees. By
becoming a member of the Board of Directors, I will
be sure to see that this kind of customer service
continues. I also plan to find ways to keep the cost
of course books down. I was pleasantly surprised to
learn that in a study of 74 universities only four other
universities had lower books prices than we do. I
am currently a junior double majoring in Journalism
and Comparative Literature. My focuses in
Journalism are Public Relations and News-Editorial.
While living in the dorms, I participated in Complex
Government. This past year I became a member of
the Public Relations Student Society of America. By
only having this one extracurricular activity next year,
I will have plenty of time to devote to being a
member of the Board of Directors. I look forward to
hearing student and faculty concerns about the
bookstore and incorporating those ideas into
positive changes.
I would appreciate your consideration in voting me
for the Student-at-Large position

Chelsea Hogue
As I approach my senior year here at the UO, I have
one goal that I have yet to achieve, to make a
difference in the lives of other students directly. I
generally avoid positions that require an election
process because I am not a politician. I try to avoid
taking partisan stances on issues, and am in fact an
Independent! For this reason I have chosen to run
for the Bookstore board of directors. Unlike other
elected positions, this one is more about business
savvy than political schmoozing.
If I am elected to the student at large position, I
would truly be “at large” and available to students. I
would make the time to meet with students who feel
that the bookstore is not on par with their
expectations. In fact, I don’t think many students
realize (or utilize) what a unique bookstore we have!
We have students making decisions that are
normally left to business people. This gives everyone
(including you) more opportunity to affect change,
because the board is of your peers. So, elect one of
your peers, not a politician. Elect me, Chelsea
Hogue, a fresh face interested in the needs of every
student!
Shelby Koontz
I am interested in running for the UO Bookstore
Board of Directors Student-at-Large position
because I want to be active in the organization and
its policies. I believe that it is important to be
involved in and take on responsibilities within student
organizations. Many students are not aware that they
are members and owners of the UO Bookstore, and
I would like to help in changing that. Communication
plays a central role in this task, and I would also like
to see an increase in the amount of information that
is relayed from the organization to its members.
I believe that I should be considered for this position
because not only am I hardworking, dedicated and
responsible, but I am also well rounded and open
minded. In addition to these characteristics, I will
contribute my positive attitude to the board and the
organization. I am honest, approachable and friendly,
and if elected, I will do my best to ensure that the
vision, mission and objectives of the UO Bookstore
are met. Thank you for your consideration, Shelby
Koontz.
Melisse Kuhn
In the realm of budget cuts and tuition increases it is
important to know your “corner store" will continue in
its promises of building relationships and returning
services and profits to students, faculty, and staff.
During the Fiscal Year 2001-02 the University of
Oregon Bookstore saw a 15% profit increase and
returned nearly one million dollars to its members
through the 10% point-of-sale book discount. While
these figures rank the University of Oregon Bookstore
as one of the top ten discount-giving college
bookstores irj. the nation, there is tremendous
opportunity to do more. I propose a point-of-sale
book discount that directly reflects the financial
growth of the bookstore: when the bookstore sees an
increase in profit, the student sees a greater discount
when they buy their course books.
To ensure accountability to the bookstore’s mission
of serving the University community, I will move to
make the bookstore’s financial statements easily
accessible to its membership. I will also encourage
community forums for students, staff, and faculty to
voice their concerns and considerations regarding
the bookstore’s services and community
involvement. My duration in office will not be spent
idly. I will be an ambitious representative
aggressively working to ensure the bookstore is
accountable to its mission statement of serving the
University community. Elect me, Melisse Kuhn, as
your bookstore representative!
Rachel Pilliod
Fellow students, I am writing in the hopes that you
will vote for me for the member at large position on
the Bookstore Board of Directors. Having served
students within the ASUO, I thought now might be a
fine time to branch further out into the community
and see how we can continue to improve our
relationship with the UO Bookstore. Having worked
for the UO Bookstore for over a year, I have
knowledge of their daily operations, the mission and
policy of the business and their relationship with
students. It is my intent, if elected, to represent
students and their varied viewpoints well, and to
communicate the decisions of the UO Bookstore to
students on campus. Thank you for your time.
Jill Robertson
I feel I’m a great candidate for the student-at-large
position on the University of Oregon Bookstore
board and could add fresh new ideas about how to
communicate more successfully with the student
body. A majority of the students, including myself,
are not fully aware of the operational aspects of the
bookstore and I would like to see that changed so
we are informed of where our dollars are going.
For the last two years I have been a member of the
Student Advisory Board for the Rec Center and was
elected into the Vice Chair position for the past year.
Being on the board taught me about many
interesting standpoints on how the facility is run and
the importance of student input. I enjoyed being a
liaison for the student body and by running for this
position I hope to continue acting as a student voice
among our university. I am dedicated and will put
the time forth that is needed to fulfill this position to
its highest potential.

Professor of Management
Lundquist College of Business
I have been a customer of the University of Oregon
Bookstore since 1980. Over that time, the
Bookstore has grown and adapted to changing
needs. Today, the bookstore is a valuable resource
to University of Oregon students, faculty and staff.
The mission of the bookstore is to partner with
students, faculty and staff to provide course
materials and other products and services that
enhance our ability to learn. The bookstore strives
for outstanding customer satisfaction by being
efficient, responsive, and a meaningful place to
work. As a Professor of Management, I study
organizations. As a customer, I benefit from a well
managed bookstore. I offer my skills and experience
to work with the student-led Board of Directors to
help make the University of Oregon Bookstore the
best and most responsive in the college bookstore
industry.
