    A touch of the
Mediterranean at
5th Street Market
Review by Tim Bott & Kim Humphries
Part of campus life involves experiencing the world out
side of the University. Luckily, Eugene has more to offer
than your average college town. A perfect example of this is
the Fifth Street Market, located right downtown. To get
there, it is only a short bike ride, bus ride, or drive (there’s
even free parking), or, if weather permits, it is a nice walk
from campus.
Fifth Street has come a long way from the urban market
by the train tracks that it used to be. Renovated within the
past 5 years, it now has an upscale assortment of eclectic
shops and boutiques, as well as an eatery for every taste
imaginable. Unlike most urban centers, though, high prices
are not commonplace; you can find something for any bud
get. One of these affordable gems is the Cafe Glendi.
Cafe Glendi is a centerpiece in the two-level food court at
the 5th Street Market, and it is one of the only places in Eu
gene where you will find good authentic Greek cuisine.
Don’t be intimidated, though; their menu is simple and ac
cessible for seasoned Greek connoisseurs, or first-timers. No
item costs more than seven dollars, so it won’t put a strain
on your pocketbook.
We sampled a variety of dishes at Cafe Glendi, ranging
from their pita and hummus dip, to the moussaka and
spanakopeta, which we both agreed were to die for. If
you’re unsure about these names, don’t worry. The recipes
are very simple, with natural and healthy ingredients char
acteristic of Mediterranean cuisine. Having been to Greece,
Kim knows full well what “Greek cuisine” should taste like,
and the food at Cafe Glendi is without a doubt authentic
Greek fare transported here from Athens. The staff is friend
ly and accommodating, with professional cooks, rather than
fast-food assembly workers.
As part of the 5th Street experience, don’t be surprised to
see a jazz combo or other live musical act filling the food
court with pleasant music at any given time, even a Satur
day afternoon. For a fun escape from campus alone, with
your date, or in a group, travel to 5th Street Market, where
you can easily take in a day of window-shopping. Just be
sure to treat yourself to the wonderful tastes found at the
Cafe Glendi.
