Wine and dine at market
!
Review by Jeremy Williams
If you have never been to or heard of the Jiffy Market, my
recommendation to dine there might prompt a look of confu
sion on your face. The name of the business gives the impres
sion of your local comer grocery store, which is what it start
ed as in 1962. Now owners Tom and Joe Robertson have
transformed their parents' little corner store into a fantastic
wine and deli.
Located at 3445 Hilyard St., Jiffy
Market has all the little necessities of
your local corner store but also has a
deli inside which serves breakfast,
lunch and dinner and is home to a very
extensive wine and beer collection.
Walking into the market, I was greeted
by two smiling faces behind the deli
counter. Since it was lunch time, I opted
for a classic-style Reuben sandwich ac
companied by a cup of tomato bisque
soup. The Reuben was stacked gener
ously with pastrami and had just the
right amount of other ingredients that
characterize a Reuben. I am a big toma
to soup person and I have to say this
tomato bisque soup was fantastic, thick
and rich with flavor (unlike the Camp
bell's some delis try to pass off as their soup of the day).
Fellow college students pay attention here: from 5-9pm,
Monday through Friday, a burger and a pint of domestic beer
is only $5.00, a single pint of domestic will run you only
$1.25, and micros are only $2.25. If you are a wine drinker,
you can pick from one of thousands of bottles the Jiffy Mar
ket has to offer at cost and pay only a $2.00 corking fee (this,
by the way, is an amazing deal). The deli offers soups, salads,
burgers, burritos, fish and chips, and an array of sandwiches,
all of which can be eaten inside the deli or outside on the
newly-finished patio. My recommendation: head out to Jiffy
Market on a nice Sunday afternoon, take a seat on the patio,
order some lunch or dinner, try a couple bottles of wine, and
take in the day.
