The former Churchill High graduate graced the Hayward track and long jump pit many times as a prep standout, but Saturday he will compete as a Duck for the first time. He’s slated to compete in the long jump at 1:45 p.m., the 4x100 meter relay at 2:40 and the 200-me ter dash at 4:05. Sprinter Samie Parker will also make his outdoor debut Saturday. The football speedster is scheduled to compete in the 100 at 3:35. The rest of the Oregon men’s field "We've got Pac-10s in only a month, so we've got to compete well." Derek Strubel Oregon triple jumper is highlighted by former NCAA champion John Stiegeler in the javelin, Adam Kriz in the throws, newcomer Eric Mitchum in the 110 hurdles and Foluso Akinradewo in the triple jump. In the field, the tightest competi tion should come from the pole vault, where Oregon’s Trevor Woods and Washington’s Brad Walker will battle. Walker’s best height this season is just better than Woods’ best. On the track, the most exciting race could come in the 3,000 meters. Duck Ryan Andrus’ best is only one second behind Col orado’s Dathan Ritzenheim and Minnesota’s Will McGomb. As a team, Minnesota provides the greatest challenge to the Ducks. The Golden Gophers were the top ranked team coming out of indoors, and Minnesota individuals have the best marks in eight of Saturday’s 18 events. Oregon has seven leaders, Washington has two and Colorado has one. The stage is set for a Go pher-Duck battle. “We’re definitely trying to win,” Strubel said. “The way the coaches look at it is, everything is a stepping stone up to Pac-lOs, obviously, but this meet this weekend is probably our second priority right now.” And if the right ingredients come together, the Pepsi Invita tional cookie could crumble in Oregon’s favor. In the bottom of the third, Vid lund also hit her third home run of the season, scoring Richards to put the Ducks ahead 7-1. Portland State answered with one run in the fourth, but the Ducks held the Vikings scoreless for the win. The second game featured a pitchers duel instead of a strong of fensive showing. Oregon earned its first run in the second on a single by sophomore Mari Lyn Petrick. Vid lund scored from second base on the hit. In the fourth, the Ducks took a 2-0 lead on a lead-off home run by Vidlund. The Vikings scored two runs on a bases-loaded, inning-ending single in the top of the fifth. Portland State’s runners on second and third scored, but Viking Tiffany McHenry was thrown out at home when she tried to score from first base. Vidlund came in to pitch during the seventh inning and held the Vikings scoreless. Oregon loaded the bases in the eighth inning for Lynsey Haij. The senior hit the ball to the first base man, who bobbled it long enough for Haij to reach first safely. Senior Am ber Hutchison scored from third for the extra-inning win. After the weekend’s homestand, Oregon travels to Portland State for the second of two rescheduled dou bleheaders on Wednesday afternoon. The Ducks then return home to host Oregon State on April 18 and 19. Contact the sports reporter at mindirice@dailyemerald.com.
