(U-WIRE)—What is it about disaster movies that appeal to people? In almost every disaster movie, some sort of photogenic catas trophe threatens a major populace. Then it’s up to the heroes—as gee-whiz bland as the Power Rangers—to find a way to outsmart Earth. The characters earnestly mouth pseudo-scientific jar gon and lines about how “if (name your disaster) isn’t stopped, (name your lo cation here) will be destroyed! ” Finally, we get treated to special effects smor gasbords of beloved monuments turned into burning cinders. “The Gore” is no different than your usual “the apocalypse is upon us” sci ence-fiction melodrama. However, it lacks the kind of goofy fun that these movies usually have. It can be de scribed as a subtler “Armageddon” Community Center for the Performing Arts 8th & Lincoln ■ Tonight ■ F-minus, Blasphemous Abnormality, Before Braille Punk Rock $8 door, 8:oo pm ■ Sunday ■ Dub Narcotic Sound with System ration M lello Lobster Funk/Punk $7 door, 8:oo pm Operation Makeout, fli ■ Wednesday, April 9 ■ Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Hazy Malaze,KakiKm? In the film, the Earth is threatened with an apoca lypse, and the heroes must drill into the center of the Earth to stop it. Com pared to “The Core,” “Armageddon” looks like a model of scientific genius. The main thing “The Core” has go ing for it is its cast. The director, Jon Amiel, doesn’t know how to get the ac tion scenes to spark, yet he has a gift for casting the movie with actors who don’t turn everything into facile action film heroics. Ultimately, “The Gore” boils down to a cast of good actors (Os car winner Hilary Swank and Bruce Greenwood among them) spouting one-dimensional dialogue about how we must save the world. “The Gore” is a sci-fi fantasy that’s about as fantastic as the end of the world. —Johnny Donaldson, Massachusetts Daily Collegian MCDONALD THEATRE www.mcdonaldtheatre.com K9VX$ff9.?!MB BUJU BANTON FRIDAY APRIL 4 TUESDAY APRIL 8 LEO KOTTKl THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS FRIDAY APRIL 25 FRIDAY MAY 2 DAR WILLIAMS THE ROOTS SATURDAY MAY 10 WEDNESDAY MAY 21 Tickets at all Fasilxx outlets (800) 992:Ti>6< Service charge's may apply WILD DUCK MUSIC HALL MCCLOSKEY BROTHERS JIGSAW JONES FR/DAY ARR/i.jfl milENTE mii&MZMm 12 VINYL I WEDNESDAY APRIL 16 TYMPANIC FR/DAY ARR/t // DUNCAN SHEIK SUNMy APKii 73 KOOKEN ‘N HOOMEN FR/DAY ARR/t ta1 Advance tickets for all shows available at www.wlldduckbrewery.com °Regoiy A*PEA *ANCE E,skfYsims^^m S£t*DAYAto!i!5N *ICE I ^Turing #3&gAH ■L£SieAYj»s. ft**;; AND FAMILY SATURDAY JULY 26 FULL SETS BY BOTH ARTISTS WELLS FARGO ■Si— P A L M E I H O M K S the SOURCE Festival Stating • All Aqas • Sand Chairs and blankats only (axcapt 5/25 and 8/19 no chairs) • Free parking at Old Mill Shops and Mt.
