Disability Services to
ramp up accessibility
The University Campus Access
Committee is working on several
projects to ensure buildings and
sidewalks on campus are safe and
accessible for all.
The committee recently began
working on a revised version of the
University route map. The new map
will outline the quickest path from
place to place on campus. It will
clearly identify wheelchair accessi
ble doors, elevator access and curb
cuts, which are areas where the side
walk slopes onto street level.
“This information is very important
for individuals who are on campus all
the time or are just here visiting,” Di
rector of Disability Services Steve
Pickett said. “Clearly marked maps
will help individuals lower their fa
tigue and their frustration levels as
they move around on campus.”
University administrators also
asked the committee to compile a
list of areas on campus that have
accessibility problems. These ar
eas can range from sections of the
sidewalk that have buckled be
cause of underlying tree roots to
buildings with hard-to-access
doors and elevators. Administra
tors will prioritize the problem ar
eas based on traffic, danger to
users and general need.
To make effective repairs, the
committee is asking for comments
and suggestions from community
members on specific problem areas.
“We need to have individual eyes
and ears looking at situations and
giving us feedback on what needs
to be fixed,” Pickett said. “We want
to make this an enjoyable and ac
cessible campus for everyone.”

the time it took to complete the
problems and the number of incor
rect solutions submitted.
During the regional competition,
the members of the Buffleheads were
the only team to finish their entire
problem set with time to spare, im
pressing judges and spectators.
Professor Eugene Luks, an adviser
to the Buffleheads, is helping the team
prepare for the upcoming competi
tion, which runs March 22 through
March 25 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
“This is a really big deal,” Luks
said. The Buffleheads “competed
against top-notch schools (in the re
gion) with some of the top computer
science programs.”
Luks added he thought the three
worked well as a group.
“This is a very confident team,”
he said. “They have shot at doing
very well.”
Marr and Howells knew each
other from a computing class be
fore being put on the same team,
but they hadn’t met Stutzbach.
After several intense five-hour
long practices, however, the three
have come together to form a
strong bond.
“This is one of the best teams I’ve
seen,” Luks said.
