Call for Nominations Faculty Distinguished Teaching Awards Deadline for Nominations: MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2003 Faculty, staff, students, and alumni are invited to submit nominations for any faculty members, .5FTE or greater, tenure or non-tenure related, who have taught at the University of Oregon for a minimum of two (2) years. The Ersted Award and Thomas F. Herman Award are presented annually at Spring Commencement to University of Oregon faculty members for distinguished teaching. Each award will be accompanied by a recurring monetary reward. (Please note: Graduate Teaching Fellows have their own competition and are ineligible for these teaching awards.) Eligibility for Awards Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching The late Mr. A. J. Ersted established the Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching so the University of Oregon could annually honor faculty members “who have taught comparatively short periods and have demonstrated exceptional abilities to induce students to reason and not merely memorize.” The Ersted Award is presented only to faculty who are early in their teaching careers. This teaching may occur at the undergraduate or graduate level. Thomas F. Herman Faculty Achievement Award for Distinguished Teaching This award honors senior faculty members who have achieved outstanding records as teachers. The Thomas F. Herman Award is presented only to faculty members who have academic rank at the University of Oregon for at least seven years, and who have demonstrated long-standing excellence in teaching and have contributed significantly to student learning at the undergraduate or graduate level. 015772 Nominations will be accepted either through submissions of the following form or by e-mail. Paper use is down 28 percent from last year. Labs continued from page 1 5-cent-per-page printing fee initiat ed fall term. The fee, which is charged at McKenzie, EMU, Klamath and Mill race computer labs, began in an at tempt to reduce mountains of wasted paper and associated print ing costs. “We’ve seen a decrease in the number of people in the lab, and we’re certainly saving paper,” Mc Coy said. “People have said, ‘It’s about time.’” Before the fee was initiated, EMU computer lab patrons used 2,009 sheets of paper every day. But now, it seems, students under stand the value of saving a nickel. Last term, EMU lab patrons used 940 sheets daily, a savings of 82 pounds per week. Millrace lab attendant Mauri Cas tle said paper waste from printing has decreased in all computer labs on campus. Although initially upset when the fee was initiated last fall, Castle said she thinks the surcharge has been successful. “They wanted to reduce paper waste, and that is exactly what hap pened,” Castle said. By making students pay for what they use, it has made many reevalu ate what they need, McCoy added. “If anything, it has made people think. They’re asking themselves, ‘Do I really need this, or is this just a convenience?”’ McCoy said. Computing Center lab coordina tor Mary Bradley said students printing in labs fall term paid #11,228 for printing, which equaled the University’s expenses for paper, toner and software. Bradley said the amount of money spent on fall term printing was half as much as what it was during the same time last year. “It shows we’re charging the right amount because our revenue is matching our expenses,” Bradley said. According to the Native Forest Network, more than 90 million tons of paper are consumed in the Unit ed States annually. Paper reduction in the EMU computer lab alone will save more than two tons a year. But despite the decrease in wast ed paper generated by computer labs, Environmental Resources and Recycling Program Manager Karyn Kaplan said demands on campus re cycling have only grown. Kaplan said the increase might be because of a 15 percent increase in students in the past several years. “Through waste reduction and re cycling,” Kaplan said, “we’re keep ing the dam from breaking.” Contact the reporter at andrewblack@dailyemerald.com.
