Ernie Kent, the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year
and a 2002 Naismith Coach of the Year Finalist, needs just
nine victories at the helm of the Ducks to move into fifth
place all-time. The former “Kamikaze Kid” helped lead Oregon
to a No. 8 national ranking as a sophomore. He completed his
collegiate career averaging 7.1 points and 1.8 rebounds per
game. Upon completion of his playing career, Kent became
head coach at O’Hara Catholic School in Eugene, then took
over as head coach for the al-Khaleej Club in Sayhat, Saudi
Arabia. In 1988, he became an assistant coach at Colorado State,
eventually moving on to an assistant position at Stanford (1990-91). In
1992, Kent was hired as head coach at St. Mary’s, where he led the Gaels to
a 90-80 overall record and a berth in the 1997 NCAA Tournament. In
1997, he returned to his alma mater as the 18th head coach in Oregon
history. In 2001, he helped lead the USA Basketball Junior National Team
to a World Championship as an assistant coach.

A 1981 and 1982 All-American while at Oregon, Bev Smith
returned to the Ducks as the fifth head coach in program
history before the start of the 2001 -02 season. Smith
immediately led Oregon to a 22-1 3 record and a WNIT
Championship. The Salmon Arm, B.C., native established
Oregon records for points scored in a single game (38),
season (632) and career (2,063) while with the Ducks. She
ranks second all-time in career points behind Alison Lang
(2,252 points). From 1978-88, Smith helped lead Team
Canada to a fourth-place finish at the 1984 Olympics in Los
Angeles. She returned to the National Team from 1992-96
after a two-year stint as head coach at British Columbia (1988
89). Upon completion of her playing career, Smith took over the
reins of the Canadian National Team from 1997-01 where she led
the program to a 1 Oth-place finish at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
She is a member of the Oregon Hall of Fame and Canadian
Basketball Hall of Fame.
