shooters were off target. Oregon
combined to shoot 3-of-9 from the
charity stripe, including a 0-for-5
night from Bills.
Thiel led the Cardinal with 18
points while Powell — who scored
a combined 43 points in two
games against Oregon last season
— was held to 10 points. Sebnem
Kimyacioglu was a thorn in Ore
gon’s side, scoring 14 points on 5
of-10 shooting, and was 4-of-8
from 3-point range.
“Regardless of the outcome, it
was a great game tonight,” Stanford
head coach Tara VanDerveer said.
“Their kids played with a lot of
heart and ours did, too.”
The Ducks were understandably
upset at the result of the game, but
understand that one play did not
decide the outcome. Still, Oregon
will be thinking about the final play
of the game for some time.
“We have got to keep getting bet
ter,” Smith said. “This is what we are
capable of.”
“It was a fun game to be a part of.”

Oregon's Kedzie Gunderson looks to pass around Stanford's Nicole Powell on Saturday. Powell hit a pair of free throws
with 1.3 seconds left to give the Cardinal a 75-74 win at Mac Court.

In Friday’s Oregon Classic, the
Oregon wrestling team (3-4 overall,

State-Fullerton to stay undefeated
in Pac-10 play.
The Ducks lost to No. 12 Central
Michigan and No. 17 Wisconsin. Cen
tral Michigan beat the Ducks 22-9 in
the matchup of the two squads.

ranked No. 8 nationally in the 174
weight class, won all four of his
matchups Friday. Webster is now
16-2 on the season.
Seniors Tony Overstake (149
pounds), and Casey Hunt (141) both

Coach's status with
49ers unclear
TAMPA, Fla. (KRT) — Steve
Mariucci made his debut as coach
of the San Francisco 49ers in 1997
against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
— and lost.
He may exit as coach of the 49ers
with another loss to the same Buc
caneers. The 31-6 drubbing his
49ers took Sunday in Tampa didn't
help his chances.
Mariucci has compiled a fine, 58
39, regular-season record with the
49ers, but his inability to reach the
NFC championship game since that
first season has created some un
certainty over his future.
This is a franchise that expects to
do better. It won five Super Bowl ti
tles under the previous two coaches.
Mariucci has one year and $2.2
million remaining on his current
contract with the 49ers, but the in
ability to negotiate an extension last
summer has fueled the talk of un
happiness within the organization.
