Mark McCambridge Emerald Sophomore Andrea Bills had nine points and seven rebounds for the Ducks. Women's continued from page 5 13 rebounds. Sophomore center Andrea Bills would bring in nine points and seven rebounds for the Ducks. The Phoenix were led by Johnson with 17 points and five rebounds, followed by senior Elizabeth Dudley with 12 points, and Dudley also accounted for six of her team’s 17 steals. Oregon walks away from Wisconsin with its first loss, but the long weekend for the Ducks is far from over. Oregon has just 48 hours to travel to the Virgin Islands to face South Carolina (2-0) tomorrow and No. 18 Boston College on Friday. Both teams will present a strong challenge for Oregon (1-1). The Ducks have faced the Gamecocks only once, in 1979, where they lost, and have never played Boston College. “These are all important lessons for a young team that is out here on the road,” Smith said. “We are going to have to quickly take the lessons and put them behind us and get ready to face South Carolina.” Contact the sports reporter at jessethomas@dailyemerald.com. Wrestling continued from page 5 157 weight class. Overstake will compete against a strong class Saturday, including All American sophomore Jake Percival from Ohio. Percival finished fourth in last year’s national meet. Harless, Larwin and Webster were all given mentions this week as wrestlers to watch from the national wrestling website Intermatwrestle.com. Intermat handles the nationally-recognized rankings of the nation’s teams and individuals. Webster was named top newcomer on the Duck squad last year. Oregon will preview its Dec. 14 home match against Nebraska by competing in Saturday’s Invitational against the Gornhuskers. Last year, the Ducks won a close match against Nebraska on a tiebreaker. The Ducks have 18 members of last year’s team back for this sea son. Oregon finished second in the Pac-10 and 24th in the nation last year. Shaun Williams and All American Eugene Harris led the Ducks last year, both advancing far into the NCAA Tournament. Harris finished fourth in the NCAA Tournament in his weight class. With Williams and Harris grad uating last spring, the Ducks have point-scoring holes to fill. The team has many experienced wrestlers from last season return ing, including five who competed in last year’s NCAA meet. Overstake is the only returning wrestler who made it past the first day of national competition. The Ducks open their home season against Oregon State on Dec. 13 at Mac Court and host Nebraska the following night. Mindi Rice is a freelance writer for the Emerald. Men's continued from page 5 to fundamentals, get them re loaded again and get ready to play,” Kent said. Pacific, which plays in the Big West Conference along with North ridge, could challenge the Ducks as did the Matadors, who won their conference and went to the NCAA Tournament in 2000-01. Pacific finished last season with a 20-10 record, beat Northridge in the first round of the Big West Tournament but lost in the second round to Utah State. But few players from that team remain, as Pacific graduated four starters and nine total seniors in the offseason. This season, the Tigers lost their opener to Santa Clara by six points before beating Lamar in overtime Sunday. Kent said it doesn’t matter who Oregon plays this season. “The thing these guys need to un derstand is that it’s very similar to football; we do have a target,” Kent said. “For Cal-State Northridge, that’s the big game. They don’t fear you, and they’re going to get after you, just like Pepperdine will and Pacific coming in here, and that’s "What I'm going to go back and work on after we rest this basketball team is getting back to a rhythm." Ernie Kent Oregon head coach why we put this schedule together. Because even those schools whose names aren’t as big as Kansas and Jeremy Forrest Emerald Andre Joseph (right) and the Ducks will focus on defense this week. Cincinnati, they’re going to try to get after you and try to beat you.” But not many teams have beat en Oregon at home recently. The Ducks have won 18 straight games at McArthur Court, a record that dates back to February of 2001, and have beaten 15-straight non conference opponents at The Pit. The streak is second-longest in Oregon history. The Ducks won 23 in a row from 1937-39, and if they keep up their pace, the current team will try to break the record against Arizona on Jan. 2. Until then, the Ducks are just try ing to work on turkey and rest after a long weekend of basketball. “There were a lot of times in (Monday’s) game where, from a mental and physical toughness point, we were challenged a little bit, and luckily, we came out of it as the game went on,” Kent said. The Ducks are likely to be chal lenged mentally and physically again Saturday, but this time they’ll be ready. Contact the sports editor atpeterhockaday@dailyemerald.com.
