ninth in the Pac-10.
The Cardinal defense is not much
better but is improving. The squad
is sixth in the conference in total de
fense but last in scoring defense.
Opponents have averaged 32.3
points per game against Stanford,
including a season-high 65 scored
by Arizona State. Three other teams
— Boston College, Notre Dame and
Washington — have all scored at
least 31 points this season against
the Cardinal.
“Our team continues to improve
defensively with a very physical and
aggressive style of play,” Teevens
said. “We’re playing with a lot of en
thusiasm ... playing solid football.
We knew that we had some talented
athletes on defense.
“The biggest thing was just the
time it takes for the players to grasp
the system. The guys are feeling
more comfortable with what they’re
doing and having greater success as
a result. I’m encouraged that they
have responded so well, so quickly
but not tremendously surprised.”
Stanford is a team beset by in
juries and youth. In addition to
Lewis, junior wide receiver Luke
Powell has not fully recovered from
an ankle injury.
The team’s relative youth may
have also caught up with the Cardi
nal. Of the five quarterbacks listed
on the roster, three are freshmen

Kerry Carter and the Cardinal have struggled offensively this season, but will look to
get out of a slow start to the year with a strong showing against the Ducks.
and a fourth is a sophomore. Lewis
is the oldest.
But against Oregon, a team that
Stanford has had suecess against
in dire situations, the Cardinal are
looking to grow up, and in turn,
get better.

But that was last year; it’s a whole
new season and much has changed.
UCLA star quarterback Cory Paus is
injured and Husky quarterback
Cody Pickett is back in action.
Even with injuries, the Bruins
held their own against Stanford over
the weekend in a 28-18 win. Matt
Moore got the start at quarterback
and became the first UCLA true
freshman to win his first career start
since Tom Ramsey in 1979.
And for the Huskies, it should a
passing game, with more arm from
Pickett. He only passed for 210
yards in the loss to Arizona State
but had 18 completions, adding to
his Washington record of 228. Pick
ett is fourth nationally with 338.6
total offensive yards per game.
UCLA and Washington will meet
for the 62nd time with the Bruins
holding a slight margin at 31-28-2
in the series. UCLA has won four
of the last five.
Arizona (3-5,0-4) at
Oregon State (5-3, 1-3),
1 p.m.
Arizona faces a difficult task this
week as they head to Reser Stadium,
where Oregon State has won the last
two in the series with the Wildcats.
The Beavers have won the last
three overall in the series, but the
Wildcats have a commanding ad
vantage at 19-5-1 overall.
When these two teams meet, it nev
er seems that the matchup is close;
only one of the last six contests has
been decided by less than 20 points.
From the moment Arizona
strolled into Corvallis last year, it
never seemed to have a chance. The
Beavers roared out to a 28-0 half
time lead and never looked back in
posting a 38-3 victory.
The Oregon State defense held
Arizona to 11 first downs, 46 yards
rushing, 113 yards passing and
amassed 12 tackles for losses.
Things look to be a little different
this year as Arizona ranks 12th in
the nation in passing offense at
295.4 yards per game.
Wide receiver Bobby Wade has
been lighting up the Pac-10 and
pulled in nine receptions in the Wild
cats’ 21-13 loss to Washington State
last week. Wade currently leads the
Pac-10 in receptions with more than
eight per game, and receiving yards
with a 117.5-yards-per-game average.
The Beavers are coming off a 24
13 win over California last weekend,
when the Golden Bears were held to
16 yards rushing. Oregon State ac
counted for four quarterback sacks
for minus-49 yards.
This game should be a close one,
as history proves to be on the Wild
cats side, although they have yet to
win a conference game.
