people’s admission, too small, too

Howry has averaged 54.6 yards
per game this year, and if he keeps
up that pace he will not break the
total yards record. He would need to
average 78.8 yards per game, as
suming the Ducks head to a bowl, in
order to break that record.
But Howry, who has notched
four touchdowns and averages
three catches per game, seems
likely to achieve the records in
those categories.
“He did come on a little slower
than a lot of people expected, slower
than even he wanted to, but he has
once again developed into that pri
mary guy on offense,” quarterback
Jason Fife said.
Don’t Duck
When the Oregon Athletic De
partment carted a massive “egg” to
midfield before Saturday’s loss to
USG, it may have hatched more
than a new mascot.
Because it certainly hatched a
controversy.
Many Oregon students have re
acted negatively to the new mascot,
despite the Athletic Department’s
clear statement that the new Duck
is not intended to replace the
beloved Donald mascot. The Athlet
ic Department is currently negotiat
ing an agreement with The Walt Dis
ney Company to continue using
Donald’s image.
Insulting injury
Fife came down with a cold Sun
day, adding “insult to injury,” ac
cording to the junior quarterback.
Perhaps he meant it added injury
to insult.
Fife wasn’t the only Oregon player
to come out of the weekend with an
injury. Onterrio Smith woke up with
a sore left knee Sunday morning and
sat out of practice on Monday and
Tuesday. Smith, who said he is
“about 75 percent,” is still not com
pletely positive he will start Saturday.
"(Howry) is a

who we truly covet"
Mike Bellotti
Oregon head coach
But Smith is taking his injury in
stride. When asked Tuesday if was
receiving any shots to help him
through the pain, Smith said “1 was
in (the training room) screaming
like a little baby.
“I don’t like needles,” Smith
said, chuckling. “I never have and I
never will.”
In other injury situations, back
up wide receiver Keith Allen did
not practice Monday with an in
jured knee but could play this
weekend, while tackle Michael De
lagrange, out with a sprained ankle,
is not likely to play.
Bad timing
Stanford officials denied Oregon’s
request to move Saturday’s game to
an evening start to accommodate a
broadcast on the Oregon Sports Net
work. That means kickoff will hap
pen at its originally scheduled time,
12:30 p.m.

didn’t need those anyway.
I’ll be the first to admit that yeah,
when handed those ThunderStix re
cently at Autzen, I was the first to in
flate them and pound them together
as though there was no tomorrow.
When in Rome ...
But that doesn’t mean I’ll endorse
the damn things, or will be disap
pointed next season when the Pac
10 ban comes into effect.
Seriously, when did Oregon fans
need a noisemaker to be loud and
support the Ducks? It’s not as
though the Autzen expansion took
away the home-field advantage.
Well, not that much, at least.
Reportedly, USG head coach Pete
Carroll and Oregon Athletic Direc
tor Bill Moos were at the forefront of
the ban. It’s excellent to see two of
the conference’s sharpest minds put
into motion a sensible act.
I see a bit of a correlation be
tween winning and sensibility in the
Pac-10. Didn’t think I’d ever see
John Mackovic from Arizona try to
pull a ban like this.
Wildcat fans probably couldn’t
make half the noise Oregon fans
do anyway.
When I first noticed the things
while watching the Major League
Baseball playoffs, I never thought
that any one fan would be so unruly
and ignorant as to use them against
a player.
Well, I must’ve misunderstood
some of the fans in this country.
Not only did the Angels fan look
bad Sunday when rapping Reggie
Sanders in the back, she also gave
fans a black eye.
I’ve seen fans run on the field, do a
striptease on hockey ice and general
ly just act stupid. But come on, to hit
a player with an inflatable piece of
plastic is not only stupid — really,
what’s it going to do to Sanders any
way — but absolutely poindess.
Besides, whose goal is it to spend
upwards of 8500 to go the seventh
game of the World Series and get
kicked out for getting two seconds
of television exposure?
Boggles the mind. It truly does.
Hey, this whole Pac-10 idea could
be a national craze. Ban the Thun
derStix — especially for Anaheim
Angels’ fans — and anything else
that has no place in stadiums and
arenas. There could be a no-horns
ban — or, better yet, how about the
first fan who does “the wave” gets a
free ticket out of the stadium.
I can see it now. Fans behaving
like human beings. Verbal taunts
are okay of course, but come on,
hurling ThunderStix 10 rows down
from you when your team is losing
is, well, pretty childish.
Gome to think of it, though, aren’t
most serious sports fans usually
children at heart, anyway?
Oh well, I guess the sporting soci
ety of this country just isn’t ready
for real cheering.
Rat-a-tat tat, rat-a-tat tat.
Oh yuck.
