Apparently it was too sunny in Eu
gene this week for the Oregon men’s
tennis team, because they’re head
ing south for partly cloudy skies and
difficult competition.
The Ducks will be in San Diego for
the All-Colleges Tournament on a
weekend that is expected to be un
characteristically cloudy in Ameri
ca’s Finest City.
Oded Teig, Sven Swinnen and
Manuel Kost will receive a well-de
served rest this week after competing
in the Icy Hot/ITA Men’s All-American
Championships in Chattanooga,
Tenn., last week. The Ducks will
showcase Jason Menke, Chris King,
Kyle Halberg, Thomas Bieri, Arron
Spencer, Junaid Hossain, and Andrew
Walker in their first competition of the
early 2002-03 season.
“I am very excited about the sev
en team members (going to San
Diego),” head coach Chris Russell

tails off here for the past three weeks
and are very keen on playing against
some outside competition.”
Players from the Arizona, Califor

California-Irvine, California-River

school, San Diego, will compete with
the Ducks in the three-day event.

Willamette than at the Griak.
Oregon missed its top two runners
in redshirt senior Carrie Zografos and
junior Magdalena Sandoval after in
juries kept them from running at the
Willamette. Both are healthy enough
to run in the Pre-National meet.
Freshman Nicole Feest, senior Erinn
Gulbrandsen, junior Laura Harmon,
redshirt junior Eri Macdonald, San
doval, redshirt junior Alicia Snyder
Carlson and Zografos are expected to
be Oregon’s seven entries in the race.
The men’s team was scheduled to
race in the Pre-National meet also,
but changed its travel plans and will
not race in the meet.
Both the men and women will race
together again Oct. 25 in Corvallis.

Bieri and Hossain earned them
selves a No. 3 seed in doubles action.
Halberg, King, and Menke are
making their second straight ap
pearance in the San Diego Tourney
while freshmen Bieri, Spencer,
Hossain, and Walker are competing
in their first collegiate matches.
Last year, King won all five of his
singles matches.
The singles side of the tournament
consists of a 64-player draw split up
into two groups called Flights 1 and
2. There is also a 30-team doubles
event with the No. 1 and No. 2 seed
ed doubles teams earning a first
round bye.
Russell is enthusiastic about his
team’s progress and hopes that this
tournament will become another
building block to a good season.
“The trip (to Tennessee) exposed
our strengths and weaknesses,” he
said. “But that is what we try to do at
this time of the year, so we become
aware of what we need to do for the
team season.”
The Ducks begin play today
at 8 a.m.

in this conference,” Oregon head
coach Carl Ferreira said when asked
about Oregon’s late run. “It’s the
young kids that are making the ad
justments.”
The entire Oregon roster made
those adjustments in game 3. How
ever, as Ferreira alluded to, the four
Duck freshmen have been outstand
ing, especially late in the match.
That was the case against
the Wildcats.
Acevedo came through with five
kills in the final set while freshman
Jodi Bell came on strong in the end
after a sluggish start to the match.
She ended the night with 21 assists
— not a superior figure — but much
improved after 11 in the first two
sets combined.
“In the first two games, our serv
ing and passing could have been bet
ter,” freshman Kelly Russell said, re
ferring to Oregon’s improved offense
in game 3.
“Games 1 and 2,1 didn’t think we
passed to get our offense in a
rhythm,” Ferreira said. “In game 3,
you’re passing the ball, and your of
fense is in much more of a rhythm.”
The Ducks are not finished this
weekend as Arizona State visits
McArthur Court tonight at 7 p.m.

Sports brief
Roderkus Wright, a backup defen
sive end for the Oregon football
team, was suspended indefinitely
Thursday for a violation of team
rules, according to Oregon head
coach Mike Belloti.
Wright was suspended for the
second time this season. Wright
missed the first two games of the
season for a similar violation of
team rules, Bellotti said.
Wright, a sophomore, had
notched three sacks, one forced
fumble and six tackles in four games
of action at backup right end. He
had a sack, a forced fumble and a
tackle for a loss of six yards in Ore
gon’s 31-30 win at UCLA last week
in the Rose Bowl.
