Golfers swing to success
Both the men’s and women’s golf teams are close
to the top of their fields, while three Ducks stand
in the top three individually

Someone forgot to tell Therese Winslow that freshmen
are supposed to struggle.
Winslow, a true freshman, fired a 2-under par 71 Mon
day — putting her in a three-way tie for second place
among individuals — after the first round of the Edean
Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the Tacoma Country Club in
Tacoma, Wash.
“Therese played a steady round of golf,” Oregon head
coach Shannon Rouillard said. “She just played super
and is on the verge of some really terrific accomplish
ments.”
The Ducks found themselves in ninth place after an
opening round 312. They finished 20 strokes behind
first-day leader Southern California. There are 11 teams
in the field.
“If we could have counted another score in the 70s,
we would have been in really good shape,” Rouillard said.
“The competition in the tournament is definitely greater
than in our opener, but I think our team can realistically
see themselves competing with this field.”
The tournament runs through Wednesday. The teams
will play 18 holes per day.
Men stand in fifth place
With senior co-captains Chris Carnahan and John El
lis leading the way, the Ducks find themselves in fifth
place after the first 36 holes of the Club Grove Intercol
legiate at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
Carnahan and Ellis both stand at 2-under, one stroke
out of the lead. The Ducks carded a 585 over the first two
rounds, nine strokes behind tournament leader and host
Pepperdine.
“Chris and John had a real nice showing,” Oregon
head coach Steve Nosier said. “It is going to be exciting to
have both of them competing for the individual title to
morrow, and they’re both capable of winning it.”
The tournament concludes today with 18 holes.

Horoscope by Linda C. Black
TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 8). You'll have to
learn to balance and control the demands on
your time and your money. You may be able to
do everything, but not simultaneously. And if
you get a windfall bonus, don't tell everybody.
To get the advantage, check the day's rating: 10
is the easiest day, 0 the most challenging.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) _ Today is a 6 _
Sometimes you get to be bold and assertive,
and that will soon happen again. If you want to
make sure you're right, however, you'd better
devise a good plan.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) _ Today is a 7 _ You
have the inside track. The person who has what
you want will be susceptible to your charms _
after a few minor setbacks. Don't give up.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21) _ Today is a 7 _
There may be more to learn before true mastery
is acquired. Theory and practice don't yet
match. If you dig for the answers, you'll find
them.
CANCER (June 22-July 22) _ Today is a 7 _
Don't allow a loved one or a child (possibly the
same person) to spend you out of house and
home. Lay down the law regarding the budget.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) _ Today is a 6 _ You're a
natural optimist, and that s what you need now.
You may not get everything, but you can sure
improve your odds with your attitude.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) _ Today is a 7 _ Your
path is blocked by one thing after another. Luck
ily, you're good at puzzles. You'll get through, so
look forward to the challenge.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-0ct 22) _ Today is a 7 _ Don't
fret if money is still tight. Let your creditors
know what's going on. They'll be very support
ive if you keep them informed. And it's good to
maintain the same sort of contact with your
debtors.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) _ Today is a 7 _ You
don't have much patience for idle speculation
now. You want a solid plan that will really work.
Make them go over it again and again until
you're satisfied it's right.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) _ Today is a 6
_ Something you've been worried about can be
prevented through effective communication.
Start by admitting that what you thought would
work could conceivably fail.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) _ Today is a 7 _
Discretion is a good idea, especially where mon
ey is concerned. You don't have to tell anyone
how much you have or are planning to get.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) _ Today is a 7 _
It'll be difficult, but not impossible, to convince
influential people to go along with your theories.
To do it, you'll need to have all the facts at your
fingertips.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) _ Today is a 7 _
Something you've been worried about can be
prevented. Let your friends, and a gentle advi
sor, in on your situation. They'll help in unex
pected ways.
