New students face few
campus housing options
Local real estate brokers say
students can find great deals on
housing if they look three or
more miles from campus

The University residence halls
and the surrounding Eugene area
have few housing options for incom
ing students this fall because of
record enrollment.
Fall enrollment is expected to sur
pass 20,000, the residence halls are
full and the Eugene area has limited
housing available.
Michael Eyster, director of hous
ing and assistant vice president for
student affairs, said the University
residence halls are over “comfort
able capacity.”
Five residence halls have a maxi
mum comfortable capacity of 3,200
beds. “This year, 3,300 beds will be
squeezed into the existing space. We
won’t go over 3,300,” he said.
Eyster expects a reduction in
residents in October, but in the in
terim, any student who applied af
ter June 30 for housing is not being
offered a contract.
“There may be beds winter quar
ter,” he said. “But students without
housing need to look off campus.”
Local real estate brokers offer some
advice to students needing housing:
Look three or more miles away from
campus, move to Springfield, get on
apartment waiting lists or commute
from home during fall term.

When new students begin the
school year, sometimes they try to
surround themselves with familiar
comforts. For some, that means
bringing their old teddy bear, but for
others it might be knowing the bank
that has their money is as good as the
one at home. Some students even
like to keep the same bank member
ship they had at home or are on the
hunt for a better deal. And right on
campus, four financial institutions
have deals for students.
The three banks and one credit
union that offer their services in the
EMU are Wells Fargo Bank North
west, U Lane O Credit Union, U.S.
Bank and Washington Mutual.
U Lane O, with its green and yel
low logo, offers a special service for
high school and college students,
with free checking that requires only
a minimum of $5 in a savings ac
count. The five dollars act as a mem
bership fee.
U Lane O’s ATMs are located all over
town and are not only available on cam
pus at the EMU, but also at the Hamilton
Complex, the Knight Law Center and
the University Bookstore. There is no
surcharge. There is a charge for using
non-U Lane O ATMs, and an overdraft
line of credit is available; however, there
is a non-sufficient funds fee.
