UO athletes have strong
performance in competition
For a handful of University ath
letes, the USA Outdoor Track &
Field Championships were as easy
as one, two, three, four.
Redshirt junior Becky Holliday
and redshirt sophomore Jason Hart
mann led the half dozen University
track and field athletes who compet
ed in the championships June 21-23
at Stanford University’s Cobb Track
and Angell Field in Palo Alto, Calif.
Holliday tied for the top finish
among collegiate athletes and tied
for fifth overall in the pole vault
with a height of 13-9 1/4.
Hartmann, a two-time All-Amer
ican in track and cross country, fin
ished second among collegians and
eighth overall in the 10,000 meters.
His time of 28:46:76 set a personal
best by more than four seconds.
With a toss of 163-5, sophomore
Sarah Malone ranked third among
collegiates and sixth overall in the
javelin. Malone competed in the
event for her second straight year,
previously placing sixth in 2001.
Junior Mary Etter also placed
third among college athletes and
10th overall in the discuss with a
distance of 169-4.
With a height of 13-5 1/4, red
shirt junior Niki Reed placed fourth
among collegiate athletes and 10th
overall for her performance in the
pole vault.
Senior Micah Harris ended his

Local baseball player
named Batter of the Week
Eugene Emeralds right fielder
Steve Baker started off his profession
al baseball career on the right foot.
On Monday, Baker was named
Batter of the Week by the North
west League for his solid hitting
during the fi rst week of the season.
Selected by the San Diego Padres
in the 29th round of the 2002 Major
League Baseball draft, Baker hit .474
with three home runs and eight RBIs
in the team’s first six games.
Baker was instrumental in helping
the Emeralds grab their first victory
of the season Saturday, hitting a
three-run home run in the 5-1 win.
The Emeralds, 2-6 as of Tuesday,
return to Eugene on Friday to open
a three-game series against Everett.

Chris Christofferson, center, seen here earlier this year, was not selected in Wednesday night’s NBA Draft.
Emerald
Draft
continued from page 1
make. Christensen, who played
with Jones for four years, believes
they’ll be significant.
“Freddie will be a better NBA
player than he was as a college
player,” Christensen said.
Other than guard Jay Williams,
Christensen said Jones has the
quickest first step of all the play
ers in the draft. Christensen
added that Jones’ decision to at
tend Chicago pre-draft workouts
while injured helped show po
tential teams his dedication.
Kent, however, disagreed.
“The reality is he had an injury,”
Kent said. “I don’t think it hurt
him or helped him.”
Christensen said Jones would fit
in best with an athletic, fast-paced
team such as Sacramento or Dallas.
Except for Miller, Indiana features
a young, energetic squad featuring
former Trail Blazer Jermaine
Frederick Jones, selected 14th overall
by the Indiana Pacers, became the first
UrsHotiraf dt alt->:d- from Oregon
since 1991 and only the eighth all-time
first-round pick from the University.
Former Oregon first-round selections:
♦Terrell Brandon, Cleveland. 1991
(11th overall pick)
• Blair Rasmussen, Denver, T985 (15th)
•Greg Ballard. Washington, 1977 (4th)
• Ron Lee, Phoenix, 1976 (1 Oth)
•Stan Love, 8a®mot& 1971 (9th)
•Jim Barnett. Boston, 1966 (8th)
•Jim Loscutoff, Boston. 1954 (4th)

O’Neal, Jonathan Bender and the
2001 draft’s diamond-in-the-rough,
Jamaal Tinsley.
Indiana’s head coach, former
NBA great Isiah Thomas, is known
to be a good judge of talent. Per
haps Thomas picked Jones know
ing teams selecting after Indiana
coveted the former Oregon star.
Some question the pick, howev
er. ESPN.com’s NBA Insider Chad
Ford believes the selection was un
wise. Ford wrote that the selection
was too high and that Jones should
have been picked no sooner than
perhaps 21st.
Jones led Oregon to the Elite
Eight last year and was selected as
the team’s MVP. Jones, named a
third-team All-American by Basket
ball limes and a fourth team All
American by the Associated Press,
finished his career with the Ducks
ranked in eight top-10 categories.
Among his accomplishments, Jones
finished fifth in scoring, fifth in 3
pointers, seventh in field goals, sec
ond in steals, third in assists and
tied for fourth in blocked shots.
