Local student guitarist to play with famed rocker
■ University junior Chris Arnold
will open for Tim Reynolds
for two shows in Oregon

While most students will be
studying for mid-terms in the com
ing weeks, University student Chris
Arnold will be plucking his guitar
strings for a growing local fan base.
Arnold and his acoustic guitar
will open an all-ages show with
Dave Matthew’s duet partner, Tim
Reynolds, at 8 p.m. Saturday at
Agate Hall. Tickets are available
through Fastixx outlets for $13.50
in advance and $15 on the day of
the performance.
Arnold, a junior in the Universi
ty’s journalism school, began per
forming in Eugene in fall 2001,
opening for bands such as Easy Tar
get, Trik Turner and Elise Coakley.
“I like opening because it’s fun to
meet people,” Arnold said. “I learn
so much at every show.”
Arnold said he often talks to oth
er seasoned musicians at the
shows, gaining valuable advice
about the music business.
“I’m a sponge at every show. I try
to soak up as much as I can,” he
said.
Coakley and Arnold performed
at Sam Bond’s Garage in November.
“His music is pretty mellow,”
Coakley said. “Some songs are
more fun and upbeat,” she added,
while others “seemed pretty

MEChA prepares for the upcoming
fiesta-filled Cinco de Mayo weekend
■ MEChAs celebration
will not only offer food,
music and theater, but also
a bit of history and culture
By John Liebhardt
Oregon Daily Emerald
Members of MEChA are betting
that two Cinco de Mayo celebra
tions are better than one.
While Fiesta Latina gets under
way today and runs through Sun
day at the Washington/Jefferson
Park, MEChA will hold a Cinco de
Mayo fiesta at 5:30 p.m. Sunday
in the EMU Ballroom. The event
is free.
Like the city festival, the student
group’s celebration will offer a
night of food, music, theater and
highlights of Mexican and Latin
culture.
“It’s very rare when we can gath
er the whole community and the
students together and celebrate,”
said Alina Hernandez, MEChA pro
grams coordinator.
Members of MEChA will also use
the opportunity to educate people
on the history of Cinco de Mayo.
“A lot of people confuse Cinco
de Mayo with Mexican Indepen
dence Day,” Hernandez said. “It is
not Independence Day.”
Cinco de Mayo, she said, is the
day the Mexican army defeated the
French forces at the “Batalla de
Puebla” on May 5, 1862. Mexican
Independence Day is Sept. 16.
MEChA programs coordinator
Anna Davila stressed that the fes
tival will highlight Latin culture as
a whole, not just Mexican or Chi
cano culture.
The festival “is not just for Mexi
can Americans, it is for everyone,”
she said.
Entertainment for the festival in
cludes “Las Marias,” a skit adapted
from by Teatro Campesino, the po
litical theater group started in 1965
by the playwright Luis Valdez.
“It’s about the stereotypes of
Mexican women,” Hernandez said.
After the skit, Maria Montoya, a
local high school student, will sing
Mexican songs. Sabor Latino, a lo
cal salsa band, will then take the
stage. The show will wrap up with
a local DJ spinning Salsa and Mer
gengue tunes.
Davila and Hernandez say they
expect more than 200 people to at
tend the festival. At least 12 mem
bers of MEChA will gather early
Sunday morning to begin cooking
for the crowd. Under the supervi
sion of MEChA Director David
Jaimes, the group will make a huge
vat of “mole,” a traditional Mexi
can dish.
“We choose mole because it is
the fastest and easiest meal to
cook,” Davila said.
Jaimes, who is from Mexico City,
said he will try to bring all of the in
gredients together with a little help.
“I’ll buy the mole paste at the
store, but the rest is my recipe,” he
said.
