Black Art Month
■ Underground Los Angeles
hip-hop artists will put on two
shows, ‘Blow Up’ and ‘Blow
Out,’ today in the EMU Ballroom
By Jen West
Oregon Daily Emerald
The artists from February’s
“Welcome to the West ” under
ground hip-hop show return to
celebrate Black Art Appreciation
Month with a few more artists on
the performance roster.
The Black Student Union, the
Project Blowed Family, AfterLife
Recordz and DCF Entertainment
present two all-ages underground
hip-hop shows, “Blow Up” and
“Blow Out,” featuring Los Angeles
artists Aceyalone, DJ Dr. Ez, Vol
ume-10, Busdriver, Chillin’ Villain
Empire, ffip-Hop Kclan, Legion,
Cotton Candi, DJ Wicked and locals
DJ Shobanon and Shortround at 8
p.m. today at the EMU Ballroom.
Tickets are $12 for students and $14
for the general public at the EMU
Ticket Office. Tickets are also avail
able at www.fastixx.com with addi
tional service charges.
“This is a rare occasion to have
so many artists all in Eugene at the
same time,” said Daniel Firtel,
founder and promoter of the local
company DCF Entertainment.
Aceyalone is the leader of Project
Blowed, a company that has pro
duced popular underground artists
such as Jurassic-5, Firtel said.
Firtel said he wanted to put to
gether a diversified show that
would represent a cross section of
various styles of hip-hop across the
board. He said Aceyalone will im
press audiences with his prophetic
messages, Busdriver will move
them with fast rap rhythms and
Cotton Candi will add a feminine
touch to the ensemble.
“Some are more gangster rap,
some are more political, some are
more spiritual,” said Riddlore?, a
hip-hop artist with Chillin’ Villain
Empire, a group who recently re
turned from a 17-show tour in
Germany.
With Aceyalone promoted as
one of the headliners for the con
cert, Mohammed Jalloh, program
coordinator at the Black Student
Union, said he expects the show
to draw a larger crowd than the
February concert.
Jalloh said with the facilities
available in the ballroom, this show
should also see improvements in
the sound system.
“It’s good hip-hop from people
who really care about their mu
sic,” Riddlore? said. “It comes
across on stage.”

Eugene queens She Bangs will
open for “House of the Goddess”
performers from 9:30 to 10 p.m.
Cher impersonator Bill Sullivan
will also perform.
A question-and-answer session
will follow the show. A dance will
follow the performance with a DJ
spinning until 2 a.m.
LGBTQA Events Coordinator
Cat McGraw co-organized the
performance.
“The intention of the event was
to promote queer visibility on
campus,” said McGraw. “It’s going
to be fun.”
McGraw also wanted to bring tal
ent from Portland, and O’Dora
seemed the perfect choice.
“We wanted to get drag queens
from outside of Eugene,” said Mc
Graw. “Patti O’Dora was willing to
do it for cheap, and she was excit
ed about the event.”
Residence Life Assistant Director
Katie Bryant is also organizing the
show. Bryant organized a similar
drag night in the residence halls
during winter term.
“We did it last term with just the
She Bangs, and it was very success
ful,” she said. “It’s an education op
portunity and an opportunity for
students to open their eyes to dif
ferent things.”
The drag show is free and part of
a program that encourages vibrant,
alcohol-free programs in the mid
dle of campus on weekends.
