Curry invited to
WNBA workouts
Former Oregon basketball player
Edniesha Curry is off to Chicago to
participate in the WNBA Pre-Draft
Camp this Friday and Saturday at
the Moody Bible Institute.
The 80 WNBA hopefuls, com
posed of players from more than 60
colleges and universities, will
showcase their skills during the
two-day combine.
Curry, an honorable mention All
Pac-10 selection this past year, av
eraged 9.8 points, 3.3 assists and
led the team with 1.9 steals per
game. The 5-foot-6 point guard
helped Oregon (22-13) win the
WNIT championship in March.
All 16 WNBA teams will be
scouting players in preparation for
the WNBA Draft, which begins at

Curry, who starred for three years
at Cal State Northridge before trans
ferring to Oregon in 2000, will try
to become the third player in
school history to be drafted by the
WNBA. Last year, Jenny Mowe was
the first draftee in Oregon history as
the Portland Fire made her the 20th
overall pick in the second round.
Also, the Cleveland Rockers chose
Angelina Wolvert with the 43rd
overall pick in the third round.
WNBA training camps will open
April 29 at teams’ respective train
ing facilities, while the preseason
begins May 9 and the regular sea
son May 25.

“It’s a pretty big blow to the team,
but hopefully it can bring the team
closer together,” Stiegeler said. “You
don’t see the character of a team un
til something like this happens.”
Stiegeler, who used his redshirt
year as a backup placekicker at Ore
gon State before coming to Oregon,
said he will apply for a special
medical redshirt this season.

Stiegeler is not the only defend
ing NCAA champion on the Ore
gon squad to suffer an injury this
season. Senior Santiago Lorenzo,
last season’s national champion in
the decathlon, has yet to compete
in an outdoor meet because of a
quadricep injury suffered late in
the indoor season.

With the bevy of injuries to stars
of the men’s team, middle-distance
runner Simon Kimata echoed the
sentiments of many when he asked,
“Where will the points come
from?”
The Washington Dual meet this
Saturday is one of only four scored
meets of the season, where the
Ducks compete directly with other
teams. The two remaining scored
meets are the Pacific-10 Conference
Championships and the NCAA

Championships.
So with point-scorers like
Stiegeler and Lorenzo not compet
ing this weekend, the injured Ki
mata said he will compete in the
meet because he “feels bad.” Kima
ta is one of three NCAA automatic
qualifiers from the Oregon team
this season — Stiegeler and dis
tance-runner Jason Hartmann are
the other two — and his points in
the 800 meters could have a big im
pact on the team competition, espe
cially with so many injuries.
Kimata has a strained left
Achilles tendon, but the injury is
minor and Kimata has been doing
rehabilitation workouts all week.
“I don’t know the status of John
and the status of Santiago, but
we’re going to do as much as we
can to make up for their points,” Ki
mata said.
Oregon and Washington will
square off starting at noon on Satur
day in the Washington Dual at Hay
ward Field.
