Expiresjl/14/02 Sports briefs Tar Heels cornin’to town Two seasons ago, Oregon soccer head coach Bill Steffen scheduled some of the toughest teams in the nation for his Ducks squad. Now he’s scheduled the toughest. North Carolina, winner of 16 na tional championships in women’s soccer, will come to Eugene on Sept. 29. The Tar Heels were 24-1 last season, with their only loss coming to Santa Clara in the NCAA Tournament title game. The Ducks will also play Port land, a Final Four team in 2001, for the second-straight season. Oregon has four night games scheduled, the first ever at Pape Field, which will receive new lights during the offseason. The most intriguing of those night matches is an Oct. 11 match with perennial power Washington. — Peter Hockday UO golfers win Duck Invite Chris Carnahan’s birdie on the 18th hole lifted Oregon to a one stroke victory over Washington State on March 26 at the Oregon Duck Invitational, played at the 6,738-yard, par-72 Shadow Hills Country Club. For the third straight round, Ore gon was below par as a team, shoot ing a 6-under 282, to hold off the Cougars. The Ducks finished the tournament at 15-under par 849, one stroke better than WSU, which shot a 280 Tuesday. “This was a big tournament for us to win,” said Oregon coach Steve Nosier. “There were some very good schools here, and it was critical for us to have a good showing with postseason selections coming up.” The Ducks will participate in the Western Intercollegiate beginning Monday in Santa Cruz, Calif. —from staff and wire reports Jordan will sit out rest of season CHICAGO (KRT) — Four seasons ago, the questions surrounding Michael Jordan’s future hinged on whether the final image from his playing career would be of his right arm extended, a championship winning jump shot having just swished through the net. Now the questions are whether his final game will be statistically the worst of his career. Sidewalk Sale! But after the swelling (Wednesday) morning, I think it’s best to give it rest.” Jordan underwent arthroscopic surgery Feb. 27 for torn cartilage in his knee and missed 12 games be fore rushing back to play March 20 in Denver. But the knee continued to bother him, even in limited min utes. He played only 12 minutes and scored a career-low two points in Tuesday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Jordan's team-leading scoring av erage of 22.9 points per game ranks as the second lowest of his career, ahead of only a 22.7 average in his second season with the Bulls in 1985-86. That’s the same season he missed 64 games with a broken foot, his only previous stint on the injured list in 14 seasons. ©2002, Chicago Tribune. Men’s track continued from page 9 Still, Hartmann echoed the sen timents of the team members who think that peaking too soon can be dangerous. “We’ve approached this year dif ferently,” Hartmann said. “We’re trying to focus on peaking later in the season.” For Hartmann and the rest of the track athletes, the next meet will be either the Washington Dual next weekend or the Mt. SAC relays, held the following weekend. But first, it’s time for the field ath letes to shine. E-mail sports reporter Peter Hockaday at peterhockaday@dailyemerald.com. Women’s track continued from page 9 Approximately two hours after the start of the hammer, the Oregon women’s 4x800 meter relay team will begin its quest for first. The Ducks are the only Pacific-10 Conference squad to participate in the event. Rounding out the day for the Ducks will be junior Alicia Sny der-Carlson in the 400 hurdles, a field that will include 76 athletes. Only Washington State senior Randi Smith accompanies Snyder Carlson from the Pac-10 in the running event. E-mail sports reporter Hank Hager at hankhager@dailyemerald.com.
