The Outdoor Program has reserved pool space at Gerlinger Pool on the UO Campus for five skill builder sessions. An OP staff person will be on? hand to offer informal tips but instruction is not provided. A small pool means that space vAll fill quickly. Reserve your spot by prepaying at the OP Office. Trip Initiator's Clinic Thursday a Saturday, April 11 and 13 Become an OP trip initiator: it’s easy. The first night covers OP philosophy, liability, trip planning, and procedures. Saturday we’ll go over the use of the facility (The Bam), the equipment, vehicles, safety procedures, and more. At tendance at both sessions is required to become a trip initiator. Free! Thursday, 7:30 pm: Outdoor Program Saturday, 9:30 am: OP Bam Banff Festival of Mountain Films Saturday, April 20th Now in its 26th year, The Banff Festival of Mountain Films, presented by Eagle Creek Travel Gear and National Geographic Society, offers big screen adven ture that’s larger than life. The festival is the oldest and largest festival in North America and one of the most prestigious in the world. Cosponsored by REI Eugene and KRVM radio, the show highlights films about mountain cul ture, environment, and sport. These films will amaze, inspire and move you. This year’s show will be held at the McDonald Theatre where screen, sound, comfort, and refreshments will all be maximized! Advanced ticket sales begin April 1st at EMU Tickets and REI Eugene, and all Fastixx outlets. Ticket prices are $8 for UO Students and OP Co-op Members; $10 General Admission (stu dents & co-op members must buy tickets at EMU or REI to receive discount). Prices increase $1 on day of show. Spaces fill quickly so preregister at the OP office; $2 transportation fee for each outing. Birds: UO field ornithology instructor and local bird guide author, Dan Gleason, will provide an evening presentation on breeding behavior and take us to the field to observe and identify these fascinating creatures. WHdflOW€rs: Marcia Cutler of the Native Plant Society of Oregon, will provide an evening of instruction into the basics of wildflower identification and lead an informative and colorful hike to a local wildflower-laden hillside. The OP has officially adopted the Wild and Scenic portion of the Rogue. We float and hike the banks, picking up garbage and tires between Rainie Falls and Mule Creek Canyon. Every year we haul hundreds of pounds of trash from the river banks. Local businesses support the effort with food, boats, and other donations. Sign-up at the OP on April 3rd at 5;30 pm (each person may sign up for themself and just one other person; sorry, no exceptions!). Space is limited. Pre-trip meeting is mandatory. Estimated cost is $25-35. .^Thursday, JjQCtam: The Barn Rock Climbing 101 Clinic Saturday, May 4th The OP and the Outdoor Pursuits Program (OPP) are once again teaming up to bring you a fun day of rock climbing technique instruction. OPP climbing instructor, Trevor Lewis, tailors the clinic to beginner and intermediate climb ers who want to focus on their footwork and place their hands effectively, in a fun and supportive atmosphere. The clinic will not cover the how to’s of belay and anchor setting; instead we ’ll take the entire day to focus on technique. The clinic provides 4 hours of instruction and costs $3 for students and OP Co-op members, $5 general public. SRC rock shoes, harnesses, and belay devices can be rented for $3. Registration is limited to 10 participants. Pre register at the OP Office. Saturday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Skinner’s Butte Climbing Columns Beyond K2 Wednesday, May 8 In 1993, Greg Mortenson went to northern Pakistan’s Karakoram mountains to climb K2. After 78 arduous days, the expedition put two members on K2's summit and left Greg "physically emaciated and emotionally wasted." Since K2, Greg has dedicated his life, as the first foreigner to establish community based education, conservation and health programs for the ethnic Balti people of the K2 region. He established Central Asia Institute (CAI) www.ikat.org, to assist local people in a region of wars, Islam, high peaks, Taliban and uncer tainty. Through stunning photography and insightful commentary, Greg will share his inspirational story in an evening you will never forget. Free! Wednesday, 7:30 pm: 100 Willamette Hall Tree Climbing Clinic Friday Er Saturday May 10 £,11 If you love the outdoors and are looking for a new way to experience it, come learn more about tree climbing. Viola Brumbaugh of New Tribe will instruct this 2-part clinic. The evening orientation covers the “how to” with an equip ment review and climbing technique information. On Saturday we 'll get out into the forest and climb trees. Preregister at the OP Office, spaces are limited and will fill quickly so sign-up now! Friday, 7:00 pm: Outdoor Program Saturday, 9:00 am: The Barn Cycling the Pacific Ring of Fire Thursday, May 16 “Volcano-hopping” on mountain bikes around the globe’s largest ocean... is an epic expedition undertaken by Canadian adventurers Janick Lemieux and Pierre Bouchard. Come and meet this amazing woman-man cyclo-touring team as they share anecdotes and discoveries gathered during the first stage of their ambitious “cyclo-volcanic” quest: 25,000 kilometers and 25 months astride their mounts from Canada to Chile via hundreds of dormant and wide awake volcanoes! As part of the “Pedal Magazine/Cycling the Pacific Ring of Fire part 1 ” pan-Canadian/Pacific Northwest tour; these two amazing riders will visit the UO and the OP is proud to host this outstanding multimedia presenta tion.
