‘under-underground’ band
New Eugene band Mummified
Deer Fetus played its way into the
under-underground music scene
at a rousing concert Friday night.
The band played for an intimate
crowd of three people in a 30-foot
underground tunnel at the base of
Skinner Butte.
Last week the band played for an
audience of 5 in a 15-foot backyard
tunnel, but drummer Flick said, “It
just wasn’t deep enough for under
underground standards. We had to
find someplace deeper.” Skinner’s
Butte was chosen because the soil at
its base is soft but unlikely to cave in.
The band’s 23 members include
3 guitars, 2 alto saxophones, 6 key
boards, 1 ukulele and 3 Moogs.
Rounding out the group are 5 trian
gle players and 3 clappers.
Members of the group got their
start playing in a variety of punk,
hard-core, metal-core, and neo-punk
core bands in the robust Oregon
towns of Forest Grove, Lebanon,
Cave Junction and Roseburg. Mem
bers of the group met each other in
“the dorms” after moving to Eugene
to attend “school.”
The members knew they wanted
to play something extreme, but
they didn’t know what. That’s
when they found out about the nas
cent under-underground scene.
“We can’t go nearly as deep as the
masters,” said Pete “the Pig” Smith,
one of the triangulists. “We just
don’t have that kind of power yet.”
The band’s music is specially
created to sound really cool rever
berating off dirt.
“Our music is loud and en
veloping with a melodic kick,”
said Kira Khan, clapper No. 2. Jor
dan Jones, the ukulele player,
said, “It is,” in agreement.

Duck crap once abounded on the first floor of the UO bookstore. Student groups at the University are recommending that the store use the
vast amount of newly created floor space for an indoor running track, a sweatshop or books.

“We just felt that pastels were
more appropriate for spring,”
Thompson said. “Basically we
were all getting pretty sick and tired
of that atrocious green and yellow,
and we all voted to change to
lighter hues.”
Thompson said the basic Oregon
designs, namely the Nike “O,” will
remain the same, but printed on
different colored fabrics.
Assistant manager Tammy Faye
said the color change has affected
the mood and demeanor of both
employees and customers.
“Everybody’s a lot happier now
because they aren’t overwhelmed
with the yellow and green. It’s more
like a normal store now, with
clothes and accessories in more
than two colors,” Faye said.
The bookstore has also stopped
selling the stuffed Oregon ducks,
key chains and doorbells that play
the University’s fight song because it
was giving employees a headache.
“Thank heavens we got rid of
that!” said bookstore cashier Kathy
Michaels. “Every time I walked
around, somebody would push those
wings or key chains that triggered the
fight song. I must have heard the song
at least 100 times a day.”
Thompson noted customers will
still be able to purchase the offensive
Oregon gear at the Gateway Mall, but
the bookstore is firm in its resolve to
stop selling yellow and green.
“We’re not even selling those
noisy duck lips anymore. It all just
got too annoying,” Thompson said.
The Emerald hopes you enjoyed
