Women’s golf tied

On pace for its best finish of the

—from staff and wire reports
NBA will have surplus
of forwards in offseason
DETROIT (KRT)—This would be a
good summer to be under the salary cap
for NBA teams looking for a point
guard, power forward or small forward.
Dallas big man Raef LaFrentz
will draw a lot of attention, even
though owner Mark Cuban’s pock
ets are deep. Boston forwards Rod
ney Rogers and Walter McCarty
showed the Pistons on Friday that
they deserve some interest.
Milwaukee guard Michael Redd
would be a welcome addition to any
team needing scoring off the bench.
Point guards who will seek em
ployment this summer include
Chauncey Billups, Mookie Blay
lock, Jeff Mclnnis, Travis Best and
Rod Strickland.
Remember tearful high school
phenom Rashard Lewis when he
was the last player left in the draft
room three years ago? He will be
laughing all the way to the bank this
summer. The versatile Supersonics
swingman has improved his game.
Bonzi Wells has made quite a
reputation for himself in Portland
since the Pistons gave him away.
He’s a restricted free agent, but his
mouth might have talked him out
of the Rose City.

players. “Oded has also been very
consistent for us. He’s valuable in
either of the top two spots.”
The Ducks have won the last four
road matches and are gaining con
fidence as they prepare for the Pa
cific-10 Conference schedule.
“UC-Santa Barbara gave us good
competition on their home court,”
Russell said. “We were prepared to bat
tle. We couldn’t take them lightly and
still win. The crowd was rough down
there, and that’s something that we’ll
have to compete with in the Pac-10.”
Oregon will take next weekend off
but then heads back down to Califor
ilia to play Santa Clara, No. 75 Pacific,
No. 2 Stanford and No. 10 California.
“We have to continue to do the
dirty work that it takes to win in the
Pac-10,” Russell said. “I’m very
happy with where we are at, but we
can’t allow ourselves to be too con
fident and play lightly.”
Women swept by USC, UCLA
The Oregon women’s tennis
team lost two matches to No. 8 USC
and No. 15 UCLA to drop its record
to 7-9 (0-8 Pac-10).
The No. 60 Ducks lost 7-0 to the
Bruins on Saturday. Oregon lost its
doubles matches, 8-4, 8-2, 8-3 to
lose the doubles point.
In singles, the Ducks lost all six
matches. Junior Monika Gieczys
and senior Vickie Gunnarsson won
the only two sets of the day.
Oregon didn’t play much better'
against USC. . The Ducks lost all
three doubles matches and all six
singles matches.
Senior Janice Nyland won the
only set against the Trojans in her 4
6,6-1, 6-0 loss.
“We played a pretty good
match,” said Oregon assistant
coach Nils Schyllander. “Despite
the score, I felt like we competed
well. We are definitely showing
signs of playing really good tennis.”
