Men’s tennis faces tough tests
■The men’s tennis team
hosts BYU and Washington
this weekend, with free pizza

The opponents now get tougher
for the Oregon men’s tennis team.
After easily beating Idaho and
Northern Arizona last weekend,
the Ducks prepare to face No. 69
Brigham Young today and No. 22
Washington on Sunday.
BYU (1-1) is coming off a 4-3 loss
to No. 53 San Diego State, in which
it lost four out of six singles match
es, but won all three doubles.
No. 10 doubles team Carlos
Lozano and Gert Vilms of BYU
knocked off the No. 2 doubles
team in the country, Oliver
Maiberger and Ryan Redondo of
San Diego State.
“They are really tough in dou
bles, not just anybody can beat
the second-best doubles team in
the country,” head coach Chris
Russell said. “Whoever I put up
against them will have to play
their best to win.”
Vilms is ranked No. 84 as a sin
gles player for the Cougars.
Washington enters the weekend
with a 3-0 record with a combined
21-0 score
against Gonza
ga, UC Santa
Barbara and No.
72 Portland.
“Washington
is a really good
team and they
have some new
guys that we
haven’t seen before,” Russell said.
Matt Hanlin is ranked No. 44
and Alex Vlaski is ranked No. 53
in singles for the Huskies.
“This will be our first match
against a Pac-10 team this sea
son,” Russell said. “It will be im
portant to see where we are in the
conference.”

MEN’S''
TENNIS
Oregon will continue to work
on the things it needs to improve
on and won’t go away from its
game plan.
“The teams we are playing this
weekend are much better than
the two we just beat,” Russell
said. “But we can’t get away from
our strengths. We can’t play to
our opponents, we need to play
our way.”
The match against BYU begins
with the doubles matches today at
4 p.m. in the Student Tennis Cen
ter. Free pizza will be served to fans
on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Ducks play the rival
Huskies on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Washington plays BYU on Satur
day beginning at 2 p.m.
“All three matchups should be
great,” Russell said. “There will be
some really good tennis played
this weekend.”

Against UCLA, the Ducks held Ja
son Kapono, who averages 18.4, to
four points and Matt Barnes, who av
erages 14.8, to just two points.
“That might be the only game all
year where they struggle like that,”
Jones said. “We wanted to slow
them down and make everybody
else beat us.”
Nobody on the Bruins’ roster
could, especially after the hole Ore
gon dug for them. From the jump
ball, which the Ducks won, Oregon
had more energy than its opponent.
The Ducks took leads of 10-2, 25-10,
34-16 and 46-22 before finally taking
the 47-28 advantage into halftime.
Lavin couldn’t find the right mo
tivation for his Bruins during the
break as the Ducks, behind the roar
of their faithful crowd, kept build
ing their lead in the second half.
In one fast-paced three-minute
stretch, Jackson hit a three-pointer,
Jones connected a reverse lay-in
followed by a trey, Ridnour hit a
running jumper, Jackson rolled one
in and Anthony Lever banged
home a three — with no answer
from the Bruins.
The 15-0 run gave the Ducks
their largest lead of the game, 69-34,
with 13:36 left, that all but sealed
the deal.
In the closing minutes, Kent
walked down his bench and
knocked fists with each of his play
ers. While he did, he flashed his in
dex finger with his free hand and
mouthed the words, “One more.”
That “one more” is a date with
the co-leading USC Trojans at 3
p.m. Saturday at the Pit, which will
no doubt again be rocking in hopes
that the Ducks can keep on rolling.
“This is for all the marbles,”
Jones said.

Kylan Loney hit another three to
put Arizona State on top by seven
with 11 minutes left.
Williams and senior guard Ed
niesha Curry kept Oregon close,
but could not overcome Johnson’s
presence inside. Johnson was 8
for-12 from the floor, and in four
career games against the Ducks,
she has shot nearly 80 percent.
Williams led the Ducks with 15
points and Curry had 13.
Kraayeveld added 12 points and 13
rebounds, her seventh double-digit
rebounding performance of the sea
son. Senior Cian Carvalho scored a
career-high 17 points as ASU shot
51 percent from the field.
Heading into the locker room,
Arizona State led 34-26 on John
son’s 12 first-half points.
Foul trouble plagued the Ducks
as freshman starting center Andrea
Bills was limited to just four min
utes with two fouls in the first half.
She picked up her fourth foul with
about 14 minutes to play.
And it didn’t help that Oregon
couldn’t find a rhythm offensively,
especially from beyond the three
point arc, where the Ducks were 0
for-6 in the first half.
“One of the things we knew
coming into this game was that
they play very well defensively as
a unit, they’re very aggressive and
they make you make plays,”
Smith said. “But understanding
that and applying that are two
different things.”
Notes: Arizona State swept the
Ducks in the season series for just
the second time. Oregon State de
feated Arizona in overtime Thurs
day to stay tied with the Sun Dev
ils for second place. Southern
California (10-9, 7-4) hosts Wash
ington tonight to try to keep pace
with Arizona State.
