‘For a guy in my position,’ Matt Kienitz says, I’m in a really good mood.’ Kienitz is one ot many homeless people who depend on First
Place Family tenter for clothing, shelter and support, things often hard to come by in troubled times.
Oregon’s recession forces
nonprofit groups to cut back
■The recent downturn in the
economy has affected those
turning to community services
for help this season
By Anne Le Chevallier
Oregon Daily Emerald
Tougher economic times are plac
ing greater pressure on the resources
of homeless families in the Eugene
area, as well as on service providers
and community members.
According to Susan Ban, an offi
cial with the nonprofit organization
r1
ShelterCare, the county provides a
variety of services designed to help
struggling individuals and their
families become more stable and
self-sufficient. Organizations such
as First Place Family Center and
Eugene Mission offer temporary
housing and help to the homeless,
while groups such as ShelterCare
provide more long-term assistance.
But Oregon’s current economic
climate is causing difficulties for
both nonprofit organizations and
the homeless.
Ban said that now, when Shelter
Care needs the most assistance to
help the most people, the commu
nity is least able to provide it. Be
cause the shelter does not solicit
funds from Labor Day through Nov.
15, Ban said she does not know
how the Sept. 11 attacks will affect
the shelter’s income. But she said
she is optimistic that people will
donate money to benefit the fami
lies who use their free services. She
said that since the attacks, there has
been an outpouring of in-kind do
nations such as blankets, coats,
gloves, toys and household items.
