pleased that the team has pro
gressed every meet,” head coach
Martin Smith said. “This week is
another important step in our de
velopment, and the regional has a
very high level of talent.
“We're excited about seeing
where we’re at, and hopefully
we’re rewarded with a trip to the
NCAA Championships. That’s been
the main goal we’ve been practic
ing toward all year.”
Brett Holts, John Lucas and Ryan
Andrus have been running well for
Oregon this season, and for the
Ducks to place well at the regionals,
their second through fifth men
need to be in the 20th through 35th
overall range, according to Smith.
True freshman Seth Pilkington,
who has not finished the last two
races in which he has competed,
will most likely be held out of the
regional race by Smith, but he will
still travel with the team. Because
the regionals and the nationals are
both 10,000-meter races, Pilkington
may sit out to preserve his strength
for the national meet.

the team to Tucson because of pain
in her upper leg, which is suspect
ed to be a femur stress fracture.
With Schaaf not entering the
race, the women are left with only
six members of the team entering
the race: Erinn Gulbrandsen,
Annette Mosey, Alicia Snyder
Carlson, Harmon, Sandoval and
Zografos.
Despite the superior competition
and roadblocks from injuries,
Heinonen and the team is still
looking ahead with a positive
frame of mind.
“The goal we talked about this
week is for each individual to run
better than Pac-lOs and finish the
season on a more positive note,”
he said.

You’ll see this smile on my face
the rest of the year if I can do that.”
Said Williams of her backcourt
partner: “She makes my life so
much easier. Everyone knows de
fense is not my forte.”
And everyone knows Oregon’s
forte this season is not in the
paint, where the Ducks were out
rebounded by Western Oregon
33-27.
“We certainly need to establish a
presence in the post,” Smith said.
“We need a balanced attack to be
competitive.”
Senior post Alyssa Fredrick, af
ter scoring 16 points in the exhi
bition opener last week, was 0
for-'l from the floor and finished
the game with three points (all on
free throws). In all, Oregon’s five
post players scored a combined **
18 points against the Wolves
Thursday.
“We’re a young team and I ,
thought they got better tonight,”
Curry said. “I think we’ll have
a great team come the start of
Pac-lOs.”
The Ducks now have a little
more than a week to prepare for
their first regular-season game
against Wisconsin-Green Bay on
Nov. 17.
“I wish we had one more exhibi
tion game,” Williams said. “I think
we still have one more step to take
before we’re in regular-season
shape.”
If Thursday night’s progress was
any indication of how much a
week’s practice can do, Oregon
should be just fine come next
Saturday.

But to take care of the Beavers,
the Ducks may have to play as
