    Student finds success
at the Career Fair
By Hannah Unkefer
Public Relations Assistant, Career Center
For senior Brandi LaLande, getting a job after graduation fell into place after attending
a Career Fair in February. LaLande was a Career Fair veteran and had attended many
previous Fairs looking for an organization seeking her skills and the sociology degree
she would have in June 2001. It was at the February Career
Fair where LaLande first met with a Christie School
recruiter. Because of her Career Fair knowledge gained from
taking a one credit Mentor Class, offered through the UO
Mentor Program, LaLande knew to come prepared with a
resume and dress professionally. She also knew how to map
out a route and research the companies she had the most
interest in. “I had done research on the organization and
therefore, knew what questions to ask.” As a result of her
preparation and professionalism, LaLande stood out among
other candidates. After attending the Career Fair, LaLande
WMwwwt wroie a cover letter as an assignment in ner Mentor lass.
Brandi LaLande LaLande decided to follow up with the recruiter and send
it to the Christie School. Soon, they responded expressing
interest in LaLande and an interview was set. Following a job shadow, LaLande accepted
a position she was offered as a Residential Treatment Counselor, working with children
who are emotionally disturbed. Said LaLande, “This will be a very rewarding position
and I feel lucky to have gotten involved with the Mentor Class which taught me how to
find such a wonderful position.”

What should I wear to the Career Fair? Well, it depends on what you are hoping to get out of the Fair...
Regardless of your
intentions, baggy jeans and
baseball caps are generally
not a good idea. A recruiter’s
first impression of you is very
important.

If you are planning on distributing
resumes and hoping to land an
interview, professional attire is
more appropriate. If you don’t own
a suit, a sports coat with dress
pants is acceptable. Rather than
bringing a backpack, you should
consider some sort of folder which
will neatly hold copies of your
resume.
