Sports brief
(U-WIRE) EUGENE, Ore. - It's one
thing to ask senior Oregon quarter
back Joey Harrington if his team
would eventually run out of luck in
comeback situations this season.
It’s quite another when a reporter
states “you are not going to win
them all every time.”
Harrington’s immediate response
to this was, “Says who?”
Apparently, no one so far this sea
son.
The No. 7 Ducks’ confidence
and composure in the final sec
onds of Saturday’s game enabled
Oregon (3-0) to battle back and win
another early season thriller
against USC.
Harrington, obviously agitated by
the question, did not hesitate to
elaborate on the question.
“Can we keep winning like this?
Of course we can,” he said. “Do we
want to win like this is another
question.
“Why can’t we believe that that
any time we have the ball, if we’re
eight points behind, that we can
score? I’m confident that we’ll get
the job done. I don’t like it, but I’m
comfortable.”
Fifty-six seconds left in the game
was more than enough time for Har
rington and company to work some
of their “ Autzen Magic. ” On a drive
that began on the Oregon 24, Har
rington — in 44 seconds — used six
plays to move his team 61 yards
downfield. This set the stage for
freshman kicker Jared Siegel, whose
kick cleared the uprights and sealed
another comeback victory for the
Ducks.
“I looked at it as redemption and
a chance to pull through for my
team," Siegel said. “As a kicker, you
dream of the opportunity to pull
through and win one for your team.
You see it a thousand times in your
head and it’s almost like deja vu
when it really happens.”
Oregon coach Mike Bellotti joked
after the game about his team’s last
minute surges.
“I’m going to have to tell our of
fense that every time we take the
field, all they have left is one
minute,” he laughed.

Now, two weeks later, sports is
back online. The Mariners are get
ting closer to the playoffs, the Sea
hawks are beginning the season
and our own Ducks have already
used some of the magic to help us
forget about that tragic day. It's
what we all need.
The most important thing for
this country is not the retaliation
our military forces partake in, or
what other actions President Bush
will take to help alleviate the
problems of terrorism. What is
most important for the 45,000
people who regularly attend base
ball games at SAFECO Field is to
know that our sports teams care.
When we walk into that stadium,
we’re all one country and only
sports can truly bring us together.
Sports has stood the test of
time. Nothing can change that. No
one single person can take that
away from us. No incidents can
do so either. Sports is what's right
with America.
That’s why I’m reminded of a
line from “Field of Dreams.”
“The one constant through all
the years has been baseball.
America has rolled by like an
army of steamrollers. It's been
erased like a blackboard, rebuilt,
and erased again. But baseball
has marked the time. This field,
this game, is a part of our past. It
reminds us of all that once was
good and that could be again. Oh
people will come, people will
most definitely come.”
Indeed we will, and in the
process, let the rest of the world
know what we are all about.
