Local briefs Hilyard Street residents receive unexpected visitor A man wearing only his pajamas burst into an unlocked house Tues day morning claiming someone had just shot his girlfriend. He then jumped headfirst out a closed win dow in the house. Police are withholding the name of the man, 23, who ran into the house on the 1400 block of Hilyard Street at about 11:15 a.m. telling residents inside he needed a place to hide from the shooter. The man barricaded himself in a bedroom and became agitated as residents asked him questions about the in cident before flinging himself out the bedroom window. Police found no sign of a shooter, no charges were filed and officers took the man to Sacred Heart Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation. City Council to hold Sacred Heart information session The City Council will host an in formation session about Peace Health’s plans to expand its inpatient medical center at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1062 Charnelton St.The city is re searching six possible sites where the hospital could relocate. Those sites are south and west of Sacred Heart Medical Center. In March, PeaceHealth an nounced plans to move inpatient services to North Eugene, but the City Council moved to block that re location. Most councilors say the hospital should stay downtown to aid the area’s economic growth, but PeaceHealth officials say there is in sufficient space within the city core. Sony makes donation to UO Sony Disc Manufacturing in Springfield announced it will do nate $86,000 in money, equipment and musical services to the Univer sity this year. Sony will install equipment and provide assistance to help the school of music produce a CD-ROM for student and faculty recruitment. Media Services will also receive cameras and other tech nology, and the funds to establish five student internships in multi media design. Northwest brief Conjoined twins listed in critical condition PORTLAND — Conjoined twin girls born three weeks early were in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital on Tuesday. Jessica Faith and Emily Hope weigh a combined 12 pounds, 15 ounces. They were delivered by Caesarean section Monday morn ing, the hospital said. The mother was in good condition. She and her husband, who are from Longview, Wash., requested that no other information be released. Ann Hight of Kelso, a friend and fellow church member, said the couple is relying on their Christian faith to help them cope with their infant daughters’ tenuous health. “Their request to us was, ‘We’re praying for a miracle and we want you to pray for a miracle, too,”’ Hight said. “I personally have, in my prayers, written the script for God of how he could separate these babies. Obvious ly, God didn’t write it that way. ” The girls are the second pair of con joined twins bom at Legacy Emanuel in the past eight months. Alaina and Xela Bryce were born joined at the stomach on Oct. 18 to a couple from Vancouver, Wash. They shared a liver and were successfully separated dur ing a rare three-hour operation. Only about 40 conjoined twins are bom in the United States each year. Identical twins are formed when a single fertilized egg separates into two embryos early during pregnancy. Conjoined twins develop when the egg fails to fully separate. The Associated Press Smoking ban continued from page 1 Bohman said her office should complete the reviews by the end of the week. Councilor Pat Farr, who was the lone vote against the ordi nance when it passed Nov. 13, re iterated his fear that the smoking ban could drive smokers away from Eugene to bars in Spring field and surrounding areas. He said he’d prefer to leave smoking laws up to the county and the state. “I’m glad to see other councilors are acquiescing that we created an unbalanced playing field, an unfair business environment,” he said.
