Sports brief
Russian Olympian
to race in Pre
Twenty-year old Yuriy Borza
kovskiy, who finished sixth at last
summer’s Olympic Games in the
800-meters, will be one to watch in
that event at thjs Sunday’s Pre
fontaine Classic at Hayward Field.
The Russian has had another
spectacular year in 2001, as he was
the 800-meter winner of the World
Indoor Championships. His person
al best time in the event is 1:44.43,
which ranks him as the second
fastest Junior athlete of all-time.
The Pre Classic meet record in the
event is 1:44.62, set by Johnny Gray
in 1996.
When watching him this week
end, be sure to keep track of his last
200 meters. In the home stretch of
the event he is known for a hard
kick that usually leaves his com
petitors in the distance.
Borzakovskiy will have plenty of
competition, though, at this year’s Pre
Classic. His toughest competitor will
most likely be 22-year old William
Chirchir of Kenya. Chirchir’s person
al best in the 800-meters is an impres
sive 1:43.84 which he ran last year.
Other notable entrants in the
event include Trinity Gray (2001
USA Indoor champion], Rich Ke
nah (World Championships bronze
medalist), Khadevis Robinson (two
time Pre Classic champion), Patrick
Nduwimana (2000 NCAA Champi
on for Arizona) and Osmar Dos San
tos (Olympic semifinalist).
Sunday’s Pre Classic will last from
11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and tickets for the
event are still available at the Duck
Ticket Office or by calling 346-4461.
