Go the distance: Stanford runs away with title
■Stanford pulls a Pac-10
coup by winning its first team
title in 74 years, primarily
with distance runners

In a meet that traditionally goes
to the team with the most sprint
ing prowess, chalk this one up to
the distances.
The Stanford men’s track and
field team won its first Pacific-10
Conference team title in 74 years
Sunday, and the Cardinal did it
with mostly distance runners.
Sprinting powerhouse Southern
California, which had won the
previous two Pac-10 meets, fin
ished a close second to Stanford
(142 points to
136). As at most
meets, the Tro
jans dominated
the 100, 200 and
400 meters, long
jump, triple
jump and both
relays, but Stan
ford countered with dominance in
the distances.
Ninety-four of the Cardinal’s
142 points came from five events a
half-mile or longer. A one
through-four sweep in the 1,500
meters set the tone for the Pac-10
meet. Olympian Gabe Jennings led
the way, winning in a time of 3
minutes, 43 seconds.
A 1-3-4-5 finish in the 800 me
ters and a 2-4-5-6 finish in the
5,000 meters clinched the meet for
Stanford, which was picked to fin
ish third before the meet. A win by
Jesse Thomas in the 3,000-meter
dlhiswasa great

cake for the Cardinal.
“This was a great cooperative ef
fort between the student athletes,
coaches and the administrative
staff to get the job done,” said Vin
Lananna, Stanford’s director of
track and field. “So much hard
work and effort has gone into get
ting the job done, and I am so
proud of the team.”
