Men’s
continued from page 7
runner-up performances in Berke
ley.
Defending high jump champion
Jason Boness broke the 7-3 barrier
for the first time this season, but
fell just short of repeating his title.
Stanford’s Michael Ponikvar
cleared 7-4 1/2 for the win.
“I was a little disappointed,”
Boness said. “But I’m going to the
NCAAs and I cleared 7-3. It’s been
the toughest Pac-10 high jump
meet in a long time. It’s going to be
fun for nationals at home. I told
[Ponikvar] to watch out for me at
home.”
Oregon junior Micah Harris im
proved upon his No. 3 seeding by
placing second in the 110 hurdles.
The junior college transfer ran an
NCAA provisional qualifying time
of 13.83 and trailed Washington
State’s Arend Watkins by only
two-tenths of a second.
“I was relaxed and confident
coming in,” Harris said. “During
the race I got out well and stayed
controlled. I only had a slight slip
after the seventh hurdle, so I had
to slow a little to steady myself,
but I was able to regain my speed
and finish it off.”
Oregon decathletes Santiago
Lorenzo and Billy Pappas, who
placed first and third at last week’s
Pac-10 multi-events champi
onships, contributed for the Ducks
as well. Lorenzo followed junior
Tim Overfield to the tape in the
400 hurdle final and placed sev
enth in the long jump (23-2). Pap
pas was right behind Lorenzo in
the long jump for eighth-place (22
10 1/4).

Oregon hurdler
vault, scoring all three entrants.
True freshman Trevor Woods led
Oregon with a fourth-place finish
at 17-3. Junior Cody Howell made
his first Pac-10 finals performance
a memorable one with a sixth
place finish at 16-11. Sophomore
Jason Slye tied for eighth at 15-11
1/4.
Sophomore Adam Kriz placed
fourth in the hammer throw with a
personal best toss of 194-8.
Sophomore football player
Samie Parker placed eighth in the
100-meters in a time of 10.67, al
though his preliminary time of
10.45 would have placed him
third. The time puts Parker eighth
on Oregon’s all time top-10 list.
Sophomore Jason Hartmann and
senior Michael Kasahun represent
ed the Ducks in the distance races.
Kasahun placed sixth in the
10,000-meters in a time of 29:56,
with Hartmann following at 12th
in 31:33. Kasahun came back on
Sunday to place 14th in the 5,000
meters in 14:39.
Junior Ross Krempley made his
second finals appearance in the
800-meters and finished in sixth
place with a time of 1:51.4. “Indi
vidually, we had two Pac-10 win
ners, and two other runner-ups
with one of those, Jason Boness,
adding himself to the NCAA
meet,” Smith said. “The real story
for us was all those fourth’s, fifth’s,
sixth’s, seventh’s and eighth’s. It’s
real easy for somebody to turn it
off at the end of the race, but they
hung in there and fought for those
points.
“I thought in general we showed
strong improvement.”
Several Ducks look ahead now
to the NCAA Championships at
Hayward Field from May 30
through June 2.
