Tom Patterson Emerald
Students may be used to toting their umbrellas to classes on rainy days like this one earlier this month. Relatives may get a more
positive view, however, as it’s expected to be sunny for the many events happening on campus this Family Weekend.
Films, festivals, fun ahead
■ Family Weekend will host a
variety of shows and events
in hopes of bringing students
and parents together
By Jayoung Park
for the Emerald
This weekend’s Family Week
end at the University will offer var
ious tours, performances, exhibits
and other events including the
Willamette Valley Folk Festival, a
Woody Guthrie film and tour of the
Museum of Natural History,
Tris O’Shaughnessy, assistant
dean of students for family pro
grams, said Family Weekend
joined forces with Knight Library
and the Cultural Forum to present
the film, “Roll on Columbia:
Woody Guthrie and The Bon
neville Power Administration.”
“We collaborated with Knight
Library and the Cultural Forum to
present a phenomenal film about
Woody Guthrie, and it clearly
demonstrates the cultural and the
historical atmosphere of the cam
pus community,” O'Shaughnessy
said.
Mike Majdic, director of the
Knight Library Media Center, will
host the hour-long film that won
various awards, including first
place in the U.S. International Film
and Video Festival. The showing
will be held Friday at 4 p.m. in the
Knight Library Browsing room.
“Both students and parents will
get a kick out of this film,” he said.
“It will be interesting to look at
Oregon in the 1930s and ’40s,” Ma
jdic said.
The 31st annual Willamette Val
ley Folk Festival, held Friday
through Sunday, features free mu
sic-sponsored events by the Cultur
al Forum and will provide multi
ple music stages, workshops, folk
arts, crafts and performances.
Three headliners include Ian
Moore on Friday, from noon to 10
p.m.; Toby Foyeh and Orchestra

Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Inter
national Lounge in the EMU. “Al
though we are not directly in

encourage students and parents tc
come to our small award ceremony
that will be held in the Internation
al Lounge.”
The Student Honors and Awards
Brunch recognizes students’ aca
demic and community achieve
ments and will be held Saturday at
noon in the EMU Ballroom.
“The Awards Brunch is one ol
the highlights of this event, and
this year we are awarding 28 stu
dent-parents who have a GPA of
3.6 or over,” O’Shaughnessy said.
“We have eight student-parents
this year with a GPA of over 4.0
and that’s amazing.”
O’Shaughnessy said the purpose
of Family Weekend is to provide
an opportunity for students and
parents to unite and learn about
various aspects of the University.
“Our main goal is to offer some
programs in a wide range of inter
ests for students and parents to
come together,” she said. “Our
events are not structured in a way
that we take every hour and every
day of the parents and the stu
dents, but rather it’s structured to
give a sense of the university at
mosphere just as a setting.”
