a CD that sets new standards for
music in Eugene! Something that
we’ve never heard before! A
breath of fresh air for our homo
geneously hippie-d out rock ’n’
roll scene!
Yes, ladies and gentlemen,
that’s right. The Attila & Dave
Project, hailing from San Lean
dro, Calif., has produced a CD
called “Lifeline,” and it’s the
best thing since patchouli oil, I
swear.
This CD totally puts my chi in
sync, you dig? I mean, right now
I’m listening to a song that goes
something like “sun in a blue
sky/breeze through your long
hair/old man, what have you
seen?” Now get this: The song is
about a tree.
Sweet, huh? This is gonna
revolutionize things. This prodi
giously gifted trio consists of At
tila Medveczky, Dave Stevenson,
and Rusty Aceves. Wait a second
... why aren’t these guys called
the Attila, Dave, and Rusty Pro
ject? Something is amiss here.
Rusty, you’re getting snowed!
Okay, now this song called
“Moonlight” is gracing my ears.
It’s a seven-minutes-plus pro
gressive rock epic (read: Moog
synthesizer solos to the fore). At
tila is using his song to tell me to
“look, see all the world, there as
it sleeps/in the empire of night
you do as you please.” It’s blow
ing my mind. There’s even a
sampled heartbeat in the back
ground, just like on that one
Pink Floyd song! These guys def
initely have some awesome in
fluences going on.
Did I mention that this CD has
some really trippy cover art?
A long time ago I figured out
that you can tell how good a
band is by the amount of instru
ments that are listed next to each
{ { Maybe all of the songs
were written back then,
which would be cool,
because everybody knows
that no good music has
come out since 1978. A A
band member’s name. Well, ac
cording to my system, the Attila
& Dave Project is the best band
ever, because between the three
of them they play 22 instru
ments! That’s raw talent right
there, man. I think the last Yes
album had less than 17, and
Rush never has more than five.
The Attila & Dave Project also
has some awesome song titles,
man. Dig on “Across 100 Sum
mers” and “Seven Wonders in
the Sunrise!” It’s no wonder that
this album was recorded in Fan
tasy Studios.
According to its Web site, the
Attila & Dave Project has opened
for Steppenwolf and the Bay
City Rollers. That is so cool. I
mean, Steppenwolf sings “Magic
Carpet Ride,” and the Bay City
Rollers did that one song about it
being Saturday night. Attila and
Dave know how to party, that’s
for sure. They also cite Jethro
Tull as an influence!
Dude, I feel like lighting some
incense right about now.
“Lifeline” just came out this
year, but according to the liner
notes it was recorded in 1998
and 1999. That’s totally weird,
man. I could have sworn that it
was recorded in 1974, arguably
the finest year ever for progres
sive rock. Maybe all of the songs
were written back then, which
would be cool, because every
body knows that no good music
has come out since 1978.
“Lifeline” also has this gnarly
song which totally alludes to the
“Odyssey” by Homer. Isn’t that
cool? Any band that has a song
that deals with classic myths has
to be cool.
You know, some lame music
critics might call this kind of
music pretentious, but their
problem is that they wish they
could rock as hard as the Attila &
Dave Project.
