gles, Lynn Fujiwara, an assistant
women’s studies professor, spoke of
the financial hardships Asian
women in California face because
of several negative welfare changes
in the mid-1990s.
{ C The bottom line is
much more work needs
to be done.
Lynn Fujiwara
professor
Fujiwara said the current welfare
option is too harsh because immi
grants can only receive government
assistance for up to five years, and
that is often not enough time for a
family to become financially inde
pendent in a brand-new country.
“The bottom line is much more
work needs to be done,” she said.
Adam Amato Emerald
Flor Jimenez, Zenia Leyva, Oscar Arana, and Eddy Morales from MEChA dance at the
Wayne Morse Conference Thursday. The dance, called La Negra, originates from Jalisco,
Mexico. The troupe learned to perform the complicated moves in one week.
Feminism
continued from page 1
Almquist said the conference is a
start, but there is more work to be
done for feminists.
“The questions that certain fem
inist scholars raise are relevant to
all spheres of our lives — and not
just to men and women in the
U.S.,” she said. “A conference such
as this provides a public forum in
which to discuss matters that con
cern us all, to exchange ideas on
how to bring about positive change,
and most likely to be exposed to
and learn about some aspect of
women’s studies that is entirely
new to us.”
Registration for the conference
begins at 8:30 a.m. today and to
morrow and is free. The first pres
entation will begin at 9 a.m. each
day, and both days will end with a
multimedia production that begins
at 9 p.m.

tour since their 1999 Echo tour, and
they appeared enthusiastic to be
back on the stage. Petty announced
that they were going to play an old
song, “Here Comes My Girl,” and so
he hoped that he remembered it all.
“We don’t have teleprompters up
here,” Petty said. “We’re strictly
old:school.”
The concert covered a wide range
of the band’s albums, playing hits
such as “It’s Good To Be King,”
“Even The Losers” and “You Don’t
Know How It Feels.” After a set of
slow songs, the group played an in
strumental song called “Guitar Boo
gie Shuffle,” before which Petty in
vited the audience to relax, dance
around, and yell.
Petty had an incredible stage pres
ence, and seemed to exhibit a true
connection with his audience. His
vibes told the fans that he was happy
to be there and was having a great
time. This attitude, combined with
Petty’s killer smile and the little
dance moves that drove the fans to
applaud, resulted in one great musi
cian who captivated his audience for
two and a half hours.
The band was coaxed back onto
the stage for an encore with a clam
oring of whistles, applause and flick
ering lighters. Petty and The Heart
breakers came back to play their
classic “Free Failin’” and the well
known “American Girl,” before leav
ing a cheering, satisfied crowd.
Corvallis is one of 15 cities in
which Petty will be performing this
summer, before heading to the studio
to record a new album. The group
will be performing Saturday at the
Gorge Amphitheater in George,
Wash., which promises to be an out
standing show: If a Petty concert in a
basketball gym is great, imagine how
one would be with the backdrop of
the setting sun and the breathtaking
Columbia Gorge.
The Wallflowers will open for Tom
Petty and the Heart breakers Satur
day at the Gorge Amphitheater in
George, Wash. The show begins at 7
p.m., and tickets are still available
through Ticketmaster.
