Double insanity
Kings even series

By Ken Peters
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Felix Potvin
got his second shutout in a row and
Glen Murray scored 2:41 into the
second overtime Sunday night to
give the Los Angeles Kings a 1-0 vic
tory over the Colorado Avalanche
and force a seventh game.
The Kings can become the 17th
team to overcome a 3-1 series deficit
to win a series — including two
comebacks from 3-0 — with a win
Wednesday night in Denver.
Murray’s slap shot from 50 feet
bounced off the right skate of Roy —
who was leaning to his left — and
slid into the net to end what had
been a goaltending showcase.
Potvin, who also blanked Col
orado 1-0 in Game 5 at Denver on
Friday, stopped 33 shots and ran his
string of scoreless minutes to 164
minutes and 28 seconds.
Roy faced 32 shots before Mur
ray’s shot finally slipped past him to
end the fourth shutout of this series.
The Kings, who rallied from an 0
2 deficit in their opening series
against Detroit to win in six games,
had trailed the Avalanche 3-1 in
their Western Conference semifinal
before winning two in a row.
Notes
Los Angeles improved its over
time record to 4-0 in these playoffs.
The Kings beat the Red Wings and
Avalanche twice each in the extra
session.
Colorado captain Joe Sakic, who
missed most of the last three play
off games with a sore shoulder, re
turned Sunday.
Sakic, the NHL’s second-leading
scorer during the regular season
with 118 points, bruised his right
shoulder early in Game 3 in Los An
geles.
Potvin stopped six shots and Roy
stopped four in the first overtime.
Ziggy Palffy rifled a 12-footer at Roy
1:35 into the period, but the Col
orado goalie stabbed the puck with
his glove.
Dan Hinote’s slap shot from the
right circle at 16:22 of the first over
time was one of Colorado’s best
chances, but Potvin blocked it.
A Kings’ mistake—too many men
on the ice — gave the Avalanche a
man advantage with 47 seconds left
in regulation, but the Colorado pow
er play again seemed disorganized as
the clock ticked down.
The rest of the advantage was
negated when Avalanche defense
man Ray Bourque was penalized for
tripping with six seconds left before
overtime.
The Avalanche outshot the Kings
8-7 in the third,, but they also mis
fired on several good chances. Sa
kic’s backhander from near the
crease sailed wide of the goal, then
moments later his 20-foot slap shot
also was wide on a play when
Potvin appeared to be screened.
Eric Belanger had one of the
Kings’ best opportunities in the
third period, but Roy blocked his
shot from just to the right of the
crease at 8:04.
Colorado, which seemed to be
back on its heels in the first period,
finally put some pressure on Potvin
in the second, although Los Ange
les outshot the Avalanche 12-10 in
the period.
