Intercollegiate
■After two rounds of play in
Santa Cruz, Oregon holds a
six-stroke lead over
second-place Washington

After failing to win its own tour
nament over spring break, the Ore
gon men’s golf team decided to hit
the links with a vengeance at the
Western Intercollegiate.
The Ducks currently lead the
pack of 17 teams at the tournament
in Santa Cruz,
Calif., after two
rounds. Oregon
has a two-round
total score of
571, six strokes
ahead of second
place Washing
ton.
“I'm really pleased with the way
the boys are playing,” Oregon head
coach Steve Nosier said.
The Ducks were led by the play
of sophomores Chris Carnahan and
John Ellis. Carnahan is in fourth
place with a two-round total of 140.
Ellis is one stroke behind Carnahan
in fifth place.
The rest of the Oregon team also
turned in impressive performances.
Senior Matt Genovese is in 15th
place, redshirt freshman Mike Sica
is in 38th and junior Aaron Byers is
45th.
Lars Johansson of San Diego
State is leading the individual
pack. He shot a 132 over the first
two rounds to lead Jason Higton of
Pacific by four strokes. Johansson
leads Carnahan by eight strokes.
The Ducks will play the final 18
holes of golf today, starting at 8 a.m.
Nosier hopes his team can keep
up the intensity over the final 18
holes.
“The course is playing very
tough, and there are a lot of good
schools here,” Nosier said. “We
need to continue to have all five
guys playing well tomorrow.”
Nosier cautioned against the
Ducks being too confident.
“We've been in this position be
fore and haven't got it done,”
Nosier said. “It's time for us to keep
the momentum going and win this
thing.”
The Ducks have come close, but
they haven’t won a tournament this
year. They finished second at the
Husky Invitational and fifth at the
Northwest Classic and Pepperdine
Intercollegiate tournaments in the
fall.
Oregon builds recruiting ties with new assistant coach
■ Jon Kiester joins the Oregon
women’s soccer program as a
recruiting assistant

While the football team begins
gearing up for the 2001-’02 cam
paign, another fall sport prepares at
the same time. Oregon women’s
soccer coach Bill Steffen has added
a new assistant to his coaching staff.
Veteran soccer coach Jon Kiester
has joined the program, replacing de
parted assistant coach Beth Sheppard.
The former college, club and high
school coach will handle the Ducks’
recruiting responsibilities. Kiester
has recruiting channels all the way
from Hawaii to Texas.
“Jon’s background is outstanding
for what we need here,” Steffen
said. “He's from Southern Califor
nia, has coached and competed in
Hawaii, coached extensively in the
Los Angeles area and most recently
worked in the Big 12 at Baylor, as
well as coached in Texas. Those are
some of the best areas for recruiting,
along with his varied background
with coaching at different levels.
Jon will be a tremendous help from
a recruiting and coaching stand
point.”
Kiester, 32, helped recruit one of
the top "10 Percent" classes in the na
tion in 2000 at Baylor, according to
Soccer Buzz, an Internet magazine.
Kiester graduated from Hawaii
Pacific in 1994 before playing pro
fessionally for the Hawaii Tsunami.
Kiester brings in coaching experi
ence from Baylor, El Camino junior
college, South HS (Torrance, Calif.)
and Fram Soccer Club.
He holds a United States Soccer
Federation “D” license and an
NSCAA Advanced National
Diploma.
