area will even notice a change tak

buildings will be completely re
moved for structural reasons.
“It’s nearly impossible to retrofit
these buildings to earthquake stan
dards,” Terret said.
Construction on the North Eu
gene site will begin in 2002 and be
completed sometime in 2006, ac
cording to PeaceHealth.
“Fortunately, the transformation
won’t start for a couple of years,”
Wilt said. “It will give us the time to
adjust our tactics accordingly. We’ll
definitely have to more aggressive
ly market to corporate and business
customers.”
Along with hospital employees,
visiting friends and family some
times spend their waiting time in
the shops on 13th Street neighbor
ing the hospital.
“People come here [from the hos
pital] when they’re waiting... to buy

but it’s not our main business.”
One man who regularly visited
the store during his wife’s appoint
ments at Sacred Heart was remem
bered fondly by stabin.
“He would come in every time
his wife had a dialysis appointment
and buy himself a mystery book,”
she said.
Employees at the nearby fast
food restaurant Subway, 1304 E.
Hilyard St., said as much as 60 per
cent of the company’s lunchtime
clientele comes from employees at
the hospital.

At Smith Family Book Store,
Evon Smith said she regularly sees
the hospital employees and pa
tients’ friends and families, but she
thought that might change.
“We definitely see as part of our
customer base both workers and
patients,” Smith said. “But a lot of
people who don’t live or work right
here tend to avoid the University
area.”

to create a fight for seats between
students and the general public.
Greenough said that right now,
“there’s no danger of that.” During
the school year, about 6,048 foot
ball seats are reserved for students,
plus 50 extra for children of stu
dent-parents.
Walton said that although the
ADFC and Athletic Department
have different agendas, they will
find a sufficient compromise.
“We need to generate more
money and students want more
seats for less money.... That’s nor
mal,” she said.
Although negotiations are still
underway, Greenough said the
Athletic Department has relied
on the ADFC’s “good faith” to
work on getting the funds back
up to 50 percent of market value.
She added that the ADFC trusts
the Athletic Department is work
ing for the students’ best inter
ests.
“The committee recognizes that
the Athletic Department is making
attempts to get the best option for
both the Athletic Department and
the students,” she said.
