Softball goes 4-2 in California
Despite a 3-0 start to the presti
gious National Invitational Tourna
ment in Sunnyvale, Calif., the No.
24 Oregon softball team (20-15 over
all) could not advance after drop
ping consecutive games Saturday.
Oregon won its first game Satur
day, a 2-1 victory over Purdue.
But the first loss of the tourna
ment came at the hands of Pacific
10 Conference foe California. The
Bears, ranked fourth nationally,
scored two runs in the top of the first
off Oregon’s Lisa Wangler (3-5) and
allowed the Ducks just two hits in a
6-0 win.
The Ducks then fell 8-7 in a heart
breaker to Virginia Tech, a team they
had beaten the day before.
Day one of the 13-team tourna
ment also paired Oregon with three
opponents. The Ducks took a 3-0
lead into the sixth against Virginia
Tech in the first game and were able
to hold off a sixth-inning rally to
win 3-2.
Led by Wangler’s 3-for-4 perform
ance and sophomore Alyssa Laux’s
two runs, the Ducks defeated Mia
mi-Ohio in the second game, 8-2.

The Oregon women’s golf team is
in eighth place after the first day of
the UCLA Bruin Classic in Temecu
la, Calif.
The Ducks, who shot a combined
303, were led by seniors Jerilyn
White (74, T-24th) and Dawn Berry
(75, T-33rd). Sophomore Megan
Heckeroth also sparked the Ducks
with a career-best round of 76.
