Track teams going strong
■The men notch 14 strong
finishes in Arizona, while
Katie Crabb ran a mile race
By Scott Pesznecker
Oregon Daily Emerald
A slew of mallards and one
Crabb posted strong performances
for Oregon in two track meets over
the weekend.
The Duck men sent a partial
squad of 16 athletes to compete at
the Mountain Pacific Champi
onships in Flagstaff, Ariz. Satur
day. To the delight of assistant
coach Bill LawSdn. 14 scored in
the meet’s championship round.
“This meet was a good stepping
stone toward the outdoor season
and a good finish to the indoor sea
son,” Lawson said. “It' says a lot
that we took 16 guys this weekend
and 14 of them scored at a champi
onship meet; that’s very positive.”
Three Ducks — freshman pole
vaulter Trevor Woods, sophomore
hurdler Terry Ellis and junior de
cathlete Billy Pappas — posted
top-three finishes in their events.
Woods upped his personal best
by more than two inches, finishing
third with a height of 17 feet, 1
inch. Ellis finished second in the
60-meter hurdles in 8.04 seconds,
followed by Pappas’ time of 8.18.
Meanwhile, senior runner Katie
Crabb posted yet another strong
finish in the mile distance, this
time at the Last Chance Virginia
Tech Invitational in Blacksburg,
Va.
Crabb finished second overall
and top among collegians in a time
of 4:47.08. Her time was just .70
seconds slower than her personal
best from two weeks ago at the
Cannon Classic in Indianapolis.
“The leaders got out slow and
didn’t pick it up enough for Katie
to run a faster time,” women’s head
coach Tom Heinonen said. “They
went out at just over 72 seconds
and Katie was trapped at that point
and couldn’t get out to push it.”
Crabb’s time doesn’t assure her a
spot in the NCAA’s mile field. She
could make one more attempt tc
better her qualifying time at a meet
this weekend, but Heinonen hasn’t
announced Crabb’s plans yet.
Several Oregon men may also
shoot for better qualifying marks
on Friday, possibly at the NCAA
Qualifier meet at Iowa State in
Ames, Iowa.
UO loses final game at tourney
■ Baylor has Oregon’s
number, beating the Ducks
3-0 in the championship
game at the Troy Cox Classic
By Adam Jude
Oregon Daily Emerald
Along with bats, gloves, Big
League Bubble Gum and some
scattered sunflower seeds, the Bay
lor softball team seems to also car
ry some good Duck hunting gear.
For the second time in three
tries this season, the Baylor Bears
defeated the Ducks, this time at
Sunday’s championship game of
the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces,
N.M.
Oregon (14-8 overall) won its
first four games of the weekend,
but could not find it’s offensive
groove against Baylor, falling 3
O.The win was the 11th straight for
the Bears, a school record.
Through five innings, the game
was scoreless. But a two-run
homer by Baylor catcher Ryan
Stukel in the top of sixth broke the
stalemate. Unwilling to go down
quietly, Oregon loaded the bases in
the bottom of the seventh, before
Alyssa Laux grounded out to end
the game.
The Ducks and Bears split a pair
of games in a tournament in Texas
earlier this season.
On Saturday, the Ducks defeated
Iowa State, 6-2, and Houston, 6-0.
Sophomore Andrea Vidlund im
proved to 5-2 on the year with the
win over the Cyclones.
Freshman pitcher Anissa Meash
intubby made her second start of
the season against Houston and
didn’t give up a hit in five innings
of work to pick up her second win.
Laux and sophomore Lisa Wan
gler paced the Ducks offensively.
Wangler was 5-for-7 on the day
with four runs and one RBI. Laux
was 5-for-6 with one run and two
RBIs.
“This is the type of softball we
are capable of playing,” Oregon
head coach Rick Gamez said Satur
day. “It’s nice to see that we have
been able to put together our of
fense and defense on back to back
games.”
