wrestling team looks to start
another winning streak in
California

With a biting loss still fresh in
their heads, the Duck wrestlers
look to get back on track with a
road trip to Cali
fornia.
Last Friday,
No. 16 Oregon
absorbed its first
Pacific-10 Con
ference loss of
the season, to No. 11 Boise State.
“I hope that [the loss] will in
spire us,” Oregon head coach
Chuck Kearney said. “We’ve got a
lot of work to do before the Pac-10
Championships.”
“A loss like that stays in the
back of your head,” sophomore
heavyweight Eric Webb said. “But
at the same time, you’ve got to put
it behind you, move on.”
The Ducks make their last trip
outside Oregon until the NCAA
Championships take place in
March with a swing through Fres
no and San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Oregon takes on Fresno State today
and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo on
Sunday.
“[Fresno State and Cal Poly]
have very good squads that we’re
going to need to look out for,”
Kearney said.
Fresno State is ranked No. 22 by
the National Wrestling Coaches
Association and features three top
25 wrestlers.

sophomore heavyweight
Stephen Abas is a unanimous
pick for No. 1 wrestler at 125
pounds. Abas won the 1999 NCAA
crown at 125 pounds before com
peting at the 2000 Olympic Trials.
Webb will have his hands full
against No. 2 Billy Blunt at heavy
weight. Nathan Vasquez is ranked
No. 15 at 157 pounds and will face
No. 19 junior Eugene Harris.
The Bulldogs are 3-3 on the sea
son and will face UC-Davis at noon
today before taking on the Ducks at
7 p.m.
The Ducks will be looking for re
venge against Fresno State, which
upended the Ducks at home last
season, 25-12.
Cal Poly (1-6, 0-4 Pac-10) is un
ranked but received nine votes by
the NWCA. Cedric Hayman leads
the Mustangs with a No. 11 rank
ing at 149 pounds. Cal Poly’s
Steven Strange is ranked No. 17 at
174 pounds.
Senior All-American Doug Lee
(20-7) looks to win his sixth
straight match against the Mus
tangs’ Charles Sandlin (13-7).
Sophomore Tony Overstake has
also won his last five matches at
149 pounds and will take on Hay
man. Webb (21-4) will be looking
for his 11th dual match victory in
12 tries against Dan Leahy.
Oregon defeated Cal Poly last
season at the Oregon Classic Duals,
29-15.
Following this weekend’s
matches, the Ducks are at home
for matches against No. 17 Ari
zona State and No. 11 Oregon
State, and to host the Pac-10
Championships.
Tennis looks to shine at home

It’s pretty safe to say that for the
first time, Oregon will be the
place for tennis on a given week
end.
Seven matches will be played in
three days at the new Student Ten
nis Center, which will be host to
some of the top teams on the West
Coast.
The men kick off the weekend to
day at 2:30 p.m. against top-ranked
Stanford. The Cardinal has five
players ranked in the top-100, led
by No. 14 Dave
Martin and fol
lowed by No. 43

No. 83 Ali
Ansari and No.
86 Carter Morris.

double header by hosting No. 24
California at 2 p.m. The Golden
Bears are led by No. 7 John-Paul
Fruttero and No. 22 freshman Bal
azs Veress.
Cal is led by the doubles tandem
of seniors Scott Kintz and Adrian
Barnes.
Oregon counters with sopho
more Oded Teig, who is 11-5 on
the season. Senior David Becker
brings in a 6-5 record and three
years of varsity experience.
The Oregon women swing into
action following the men’s Cal
match. The Ducks face a much
easier schedule this weekend
with non-conference opponents
UC-Santa Barbara and Boise
State. Last weekend, Oregon was
swept by No. 1 Stanford and No.
5 Cal.
Boise State and UC-Santa Bar
bara will play each other at the
Student Tennis Center on Friday
before games with Portland and
Oregon. UC-Santa Barbara is led
by junior Cindy Ammann.
On Sunday, the Ducks complete
the weekend with a match against
Boise State. The Broncos are 2-1
this season and are led by sopho
more Renate Stoop.
Leading Oregon into action are
sophomores Monika Geiczys and
Jeanette Mattsson. Both have
picked up five wins apiece while
splitting time at the No. 1 singles
position.
Geiczys and freshman Courtney
Nagle comprise Oregon’s top dou
bles team. Last weekend against
Cal, the duo came within two
points of upsetting the No. 17 dou
bles team of Nicole Havlicek and
Jieun Jacobs.
