Wrestling to face Broncos
■ Boise State visits Mac Court
tonight for a wrestling match
that could decide the Pac-10
crown
By Robbie McCallum
Oregon Daily Emerald
With the Pacific-10 Conference
championships looming five weeks
away, conference
wrestling teams
now enter their
home stretch of
matches. A crucial
match that may
decide the regular
season title takes
place today at McArthur Court.
No. 12 Oregon and No. 11 Boise
State face off in a battle of undefeat
WRESTLING
ed Pac-10 teams. The Ducks and
Broncos match up well and have
met twice this season already in
tournaments.
At the Cliff Keen Invitational, Ore
gon edged the Broncos by four points
in the team scoring. Three weeks later
at the Reno Tournament of Champi
ons, Boise State prevailed in the scor
ing column, 103.5-77.5.
Some of the key matchups take
place between some of the highest
ranked wrestlers on each team. No.
8 Shaun Williams has gotten the
best of Boise State’s No. 19 Ben
Vombaur twice this season, both
times by decision.
The 184-pound match will be a
battle of senior All-Americans. No.
7 Doug Lee will face No. 8 Cash Ed
wards for the second time this sea
son. Lee edged Edwards 4-3 at the
Las Vegas Invitational.
A toss-up match will be at 197
pounds, where the Ducks’ Chael
Sonnen and Boise State’s Rusty
Cook have split two matches this
season. Sonnen prevailed 5-3 at the
Southern Oregon Open, while Cook
won the second meeting 6-4 at the
Reno Tournament of Champions.
Other key matches include the
Broncos’ No. 3 Kirk White versus
No. 19 Eugene Harris at 157
pounds, and No. 8 Eric Webb versus
Boise State’s No. 19 Bart Johnson at
heavyweight.
Last season, the Broncos upend
ed Oregon 24-11 en route to their
first Pac-10 championship ever.
Whoever wins this match will most
likely be the favorite coming into
the conference championships in
March at McArthur court.
Top tennis teams visit Oregon
■The women’s tennis team
plays for the first time in the
Student Tennis Center against
No. 1 Stanford
By Robbie McCallum
Oregon Daily Emerald
Who can think of a bigger way to
kick off a new facility than to bring in
some of the top teams in the nation?
But No. 1 Stan
ford and No. 5
California?
The Oregon
women’s tennis
team will have its
hands full in its
first-ever home
tennis matches at the Student Ten
nis Center. The Ducks play Stanford
at noon Saturday, then face off with
Cal at noon Sunday.
Oregon faces the two toughest
teams in the Pacific-10 Conference,
as both the Golden Bears and the
Cardinal were in the final four the
last two seasons. Oregon will be
looking for its first-ever wins
against the Bay Area schools since
the creation of the Pac-10.
Oregon ace Monika Geiczys will
square off with No. 8 Lauren
Kalvaria of Stanford and No. 38
Raquel Kops-Jones of Cal. The Car
dinal has three other players ranked
in the top-25 of the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association polls.
The Ducks got a close-up look at
their conference rivals last weekend
at the Pac-10 Indoor meet in Seattle.
Junior Adeline Arnaud defeated
Cal’s Katherine Havilcek, while jun
ior Janice Nyland and sophomore
Jeanette Mattsson were upended by
Stanford players.
Stanford and Cal also bring in
highly ranked doubles teams. Stan
ford’s team of Gabriela Lastra and
Kalvaria is ranked No. 3. Cal’s top
team is No. 17 Nicole Havilcek and
Jieun Jacobs.
Both matches begin at noon at the
Student Tennis Center behind the
Recreation Center on East 15th Street.
The Oregon men are also in ac
tion this weekend. The Ducks will
shake off the holiday cobwebs in
Bloomington, Minn, for the Foster
Klima Ice Volleys.
Sophomore Oded Teig will lead
Oregon against No. 30 Indiana State
today at 6 p.m. The winner ad
vances to play either No. 18 Min
nesota or North Carolina State on
Saturday.
