A 16-point lead is good enough for
most sports, but not in the sport of
wrestling. The Oregon wrestling team
held a large but not insurmountable
lead over Stanford with four matches
remaining. That’s when the Ducks de
livered their knockout punch.
Consecutive pins by Doug Lee, Chael
Sonnen and Eric Webb not only
clinched the match for Oregon, but
turned it into a rout in front of 418 at
McArthur Court Sunday.
Lee, who wrestled for the first time
this season, tangled with Stanford’s
Harold Penson for 5 minutes, 48 sec
onds before earning the match-clinch
ing pin. The senior All-American had
to sit out Oregon’s first two competi
tions with a sprained ankle and began
practicing only four days ago.
“I was more concerned with my
shape than my injury,” Lee said. “The
ankle feels great. But I haven’t been able
to practice much.”
Sonnen responded with a pin in 5:53
over the Cardinal’s Fred Luminoso to
bring the team score to 31-3. The win
pushes Sonnen’s season record to 6-0,
2-0 in the Pacific-10 conference.
Webb recorded the third straight pin
in 3:14 at the heavyweight position
over Brad Selby.
“Everything clicked today,” Webb
said. “Following two guys like Doug
[Lee] and Chael [Sonnen] in a lineup
makes my job easier.”
With the 184, 197 and heavyweight
positions filled with three of Oregon’s
top wrestlers, the Ducks now have a for
midable 1-2-3 punch at the top of their
lineup.

Portland State was in the zone Satur
day night — on defense.
Oregon’s newcomers were also in the
zone — on offense.
The Ducks battled through a stingy
Vikings zone defense in the first half,
and then rode the coattails of their four
freshman in the second half en route to
a 84-66 victory in front of 7,471 fans at
McArthur Court.
The win pushed Oregon’s early sea
son record to 3-0, and provided head
coach Ernie Kent with another game to
evaluate in his building project of the
2000-01 Ducks.
“I was very pleased and impressed
with the effort that was put forth on
that floor tonight,” Kent said. “This was
a good game for us because as a team
we got better.”
Oregon’s four freshmen all recorded
career highs in points with forward
Luke Jackson leading the way with a
team-high 13 points.
“We’re still gelling as a team,” said
Jackson, who is a Creswell native.
“Everyone is going to come in and have
a good night, and whoever does it,
everyone on the team is happy for
them. We just want to get the win.”

■ Senior Camber Ellingson makes
her scoring debut in Oregon’s Friday

It took more than three seasons to hap
pen, but senior guard Camber Ellingson fi
nally moved from the bench to the score
board.
The Baker City-native played a career
high nine minutes, beating her four min
utes against Wyoming on Nov. 28, 1998.
She scored a career-high five points on 2
for-3 shooting, grabbed one rebound and
also dished an assist.
This could only mean
one thing Friday night at
McArthur Court: It was not
a good day to be a Portland
Pilot.

used its depth to beat Port

Notre Dame beats USC,
UO football still in limbo
■ USC s loss to Notre Dame does
nothing to help clarify Oregon’s

Southern California finished last in the Pa
cific-10 Conference, but regardless, its final
game of the season still had bowl game im
plications.
Unfortunately, the Trojans’ loss to No. 10
Notre Dame had a negative impact on the
Pac-10 postseason.
When the Irish smashed USC’s defense
and won 38-21, they secured a likely Fiesta
Bowl matchup that potentially pits them
against No. 6 Virginia Tech. Oregon State,
ranked No. 5, most likely would have been
paired with the Hokies had Southern Cali
fornia won the game. That would have led
No. 9 Oregon to the Holiday Bowl in San
Diego.
The Beavers are ranked higher than Vir
ginia Tech. However, the presence of Hokies'
quarterback Michael Vick at the Fiesta Bowl
