Oregon falls again to Cal
■The volleyball squad ends
the Pac-10 season with a 3-0
loss in Berkeley
By Adam Jude
Oregon Daily Emerald
A strong competitive attitude is all
first-year head coach Carl Ferreira
has demanded of his volleyball team
this season. For most of the year, his
demands have been met.
In the Ducks’ final Pacific-10
Conference match of 2000, howev
er, the winning mentality was
nowhere to be found, as the Ducks
(10-17 overall, 2-16 Pac-10) fell 3-0
to the California Bears (11-15,6-12).
“We lacked discipline," junior
hitter Monique Tobbagi said. “It
took us two games to get our com
petitive attitude and you can't do
that on the road.”
A .134 attack percentage helped
the Ducks to defeat, as the Bears hit
.388 and outkilled Oregon 52-31.
The Ducks, who have had some
trouble stopping opponents at the
net, outblocked Cal 7-4.
In game one, Cal used two huge
runs to overpower Oregon. After
the Ducks put their only two points
on the board at 5-2, the Bears
dropped 10 consecutive points to
take the first game 15-2.
Game two was more of the same.
Cal took a quick 6-0 lead, and used
another 6-0 run to take a 12-3 lead.
Three straight points by the Ducks
were not enough as they fell 15-6 in
game two.
“We just flat out didn’t play com
petitive in games one and two,” Fer
reira said.
Another run put the Bears up 7-1
in game three, but Oregon came
within two on kills by Tobbagi and
sophomore Sydney Chute. A Cal
win was inevitable, though, as the
Bears finished with a 15-9 victory.
In her final conference match,
senior Halie Mazza aided the Ducks
with 10 kills and a .222 attack per
centage. Tobbagi also finished with
10 kills and a .269 average.
Wrestlers rumble in Ashland
■ Four Ducks capture top
finishes at the annual
Southern Oregon Open
By Robbie McCallum
Oregon Daily Emerald
It’s a shame that the Southern
Oregon Open wrestling tourna
ment disregards team scores. If it
didn’t, the Oregon wrestling team
would have placed quite well.
The Ducks came home from
Ashland with four individual
champions, a runner-up and two
other placers in the 32-man, 10
bracket tournament.
Only llth-ranked Boise State
placed more wrestlers in the top
six spots. Overall, Oregon was
more dominant than any other
team in the 17-team field.
“Everyone across the board is
making improvements,” Oregon
head coach Chuck Kearney said.
“We wrestled up to a higher level
and wrestled with more intensity.”
Senior Chael Sonnen stormed
though the 197-pound bracket,
earning three pins and a major deci
sion en route to the championship
match. Sonnen earned a hard
fought 5-3 decision over Boise
State’s eighth-ranked Rusty Cook for
the trophy.
Sophomore Shaun Williams
was impressive in only his second
outing as a Duck. The junior col
lege transfer picked up five victo
ries at 125 pounds to finish first.
Williams defeated Pacific-10 con
ference rivals Clint Sieminski of
Oregon State 13-4 and Boise
State’s Ben Vombaur 6-5 to place
first. Williams is 6-0 on the season
after transferring from North Idaho
College.
The Ducks were strong in the
133 pound class, with sophomores
Brian Watson placing first and Ja
son Harless tied for fifth. Watson
beat all four of his opponents by
decision, including Boise State’s
Charlie Griggs in the champi
onship match.
Sophomore Tony Overstake de
fended his No. 1 seeding at 149
pounds with a first-place finish.
Overstake is 6-0 on the season.
Sophomore Casey Hunt and
freshman Branson Phillips went 2
3 at 141 pounds. The Open was
Phillips’ first competition of the
season, and Oregon’s first tourna
ment of the season.
The Ducks will have a short
Thanksgiving break this weekend.
On Sunday, Oregon hosts Pac-10
rival Stanford in the home opener.
Both teams have 1-0 season
records.
