to the message itself.”
Associate professor of music
Robert Kyr organized the event,
which he said is an opportunity
for people to explore the concept
of peace in a new way.
‘‘Having just completed a centu
ry filled with war, there is no bet
ter time to focus on a new direc
tion,” Kyr said. “This theme
relates to the striving for peace in
one’s own life, community, region,
nation and throughout the world.”
Kyr said people should not un
derestimate the ability of the arts to
mend severed borders and ideolo
gies.

theme of the work is related to
peace itself, then even more so.”
Kyr’s honors orchestra will per
form his Symphony No. 9, “The
Spirit of Time,” from 8 to 10 p.m.
at the Silva Concert Hall in the
Hu It Center for the Performing
Arts.
The combination of music and
speech on a scale of this magni
tude is rare, said Lori O’Hollaren,
project coordinator for the Savage
Endowment for International Rela
tions and Peace, which arranges
educational speeches and work
shops by international figures.
“You learn so much more about
how music makes a statement,”
she said. “My phone has been ring
ing off the hook with people want
ing to find out more about this.”

Republicans, meanwhile, re
leased federal court affidavits from
at least five witnesses who contend
they watched earlier hand re
counts in Palm Beach County this
week and observed irregularities
and possible ballot tampering.
“I personally observed Canvass
ing Board counters ‘twisting’ and
otherwise manipulating the paper
ballots in an attempt to dislodge
chads from the ballots them
selves,” Mark P. Klimek, an observ
er of the Palm Beach County hand
re-count, wrote in an affidavit.
As for the state Supreme Court
ruling, Judge Charles Burton, a
member of the Palm Beach County
canvassing board, said it did not
appear to cover the underlying
question of whether the results of
the hand counts must be rolled
into the official vote totals.
(( There is no legal
impediment to the
re-counts continuing.
Florida Supreme Court
The issue has been simmering
for several days but was given new
urgency by Harris’ decision that
ballots re-counted after last Tues
day would not matter. Democrats
urged the justices to rule quickly
because counties didn’t know if
they should keep counting.
Gore’s chief lawyer, David Boies,
interpreted the ruling as a signal to
Harris that she shouldn’t ignore
the late tallies.
“I think it’s very unlikely that the
Florida Supreme Court would have
directed that these counts go for
ward if all they meant to do was pre
serve these votes for history,” Boies
said.
Separately, a state judge heard
Core’s argument Thursday that
Harris ought to count the late tal
lies in her final total. That final to
tal will determine which candi
date captures Florida’s 25 Electoral
College votes and thus, almost cer
tainly, the White House.
Circuit Judge Terry Lewis, a De
mocrat, will not rule until Friday
morning at the earliest on Gore’s
request to indefinitely extend the
deadline for counties to submit re
vised counts.
